Vallodolid Hammocks
I've read all about the hammocks available in Vallodolid. My wife and I will be staying at the Royal Porto Real 1st week of Feb. 2006. Is there a store in Playa, or near by, where I can buy hammocks that are close to the quality of those offered in Vallodolid? This will be our first trip to the Mayan, and from all we have read on this board and other extensive research I've done over the past few months (best bars/clubs, shopping, restuarants etc.) our anticipation could not be higher!

the prison near Valladolid sells the nicest nylon thread hammocks in the area (at least that I've seen) but cotton hammocks are more comfortable, IMHO.
I think there are some other posts on the prison hammocks you can find by searching. |

Yes, I read the posts in the thread re. the prison hammocks. Didn't know they were synthetic. I would prefer the cotton. If anyone can suggest the best place they have found in/near Playa for these it would be appreciated.

I agree, the hammocks sold at the prison in Valladolid are the nicest in this area, for sure, both when it comes to quality and color choices. There's no one place in Playa, that I know of, that consistently have hammocks of that quality. In fact, it's hard to recommend any of the souvenir stores for consistency in quality. Having said that, there is one area where I have found a few totally acceptable hammocks in Playa and that is on Calle 2 between 5th and 10th Avenue. On the north side of the street are a few stores that sometimes have a decent selection. I have also seen a few very nice hammocks in the little gift store at La Cueva del Chango, but I don't know if they always have a selection there or if it's just sometimes. Good luck!

Just read your other post re material. Nylon is not quite as comfortable as cotton, and colors are different (brighter on nylon than on cotton), but it might be a better choice if you plan to use it outdoors. The nylon hammock holds up a lot better in rain and sunshine, whereas the cotton hammock fades more easily. The cotton also breaks a lot easier when a button gets snagged, for example.

I bought my hammock at the shops in Playacar accross from the Viva Mayan. If I remember correctly, I paid about $30 US for a nylon hammock. We also bought a hammock chair for my wife - $35 US (?). Her chair is hung in our 3-season room & my hammock only is hung when I plan on using it. (Otherwise, I'd have to pry one of my 2 son's out of it.)
We loooked at the cotton & nylon before we bought the nylon. I agree, for overall comfort - cotton does feels better. For durability - the nylon is much better. I do know this one thing to be a fact (according to my wife), it doesn't make a difference - either cotton or nylon - I still snore... If you're hanging it outside - go wtih the nylon. Thanks Anna, LndShrk. The hammock will be hung outside for the summer months
so maybe nylon woul be the way to go. Would it be cheaper to take a taxi to the prison or rent a car for the day? If rent, who do you recommend? |

Make sure you give yourself some time to see a little of Valladolid, you might even consider taking a taxi once you are there to a cenote. |

We've got nylon and I like it just fine. Do yourself a favor and put hooks up in your tv room as well- it's great for relaxing indoors in the winter as well. I'd also suggest spending at least the night in Valladolid. Nice town- fairly close to Chichen Itza, Cenote Ixkil?, and there is a nice cenote near town that starts with a D but I can't remember the name. Or if you drive, get the hammock and drive on to Chichen Itza, stay there at the Delores? Alba, do cenote Ixkil in the afternoon and hit the ruins in the early AM before the heat and tourists hit and drive back to Playa in the afternoon.

FWIW, I own about 5 beautiful hammocks (at least a couple of them from the prison and the others from Ek Balam) that I will probably never use. I'd be willing to sell them if you're interested. I'd have to get them out from under my bed and open them up to see what's what color-wise and quality-wise but, if you think you might want them, I will, if you let me know.
