Mother Earth gets nasty again (Asian Earthquake)

Mother Earth can be very pretty, but I just hate it when she gets nasty and a lot of innocent people get killed because of it.
More than 1300 already, and going up rapidly...

A very dear, wonderful person (friend) lives and works at a hospital near the earthquake area in Islamabad. I have tried to contact her, but as in a disaster like this, all phone lines and electricity are off. She is a doctor at a hospital. I heard one hospital collapsed. I hope she wasn't in it.

PANABAJ, Guatemala

From MSNBC:
PANABAJ, Guatemala - Rescuers pulled 71 bodies from a mudslide in a Guatemalan village, and local officials feared hundreds more may have died in the worst single tragedy from rains that devastated Central America.
The mayor of a nearby town said up to 1,000 people may lie buried under the mud, in places 40 feet thick, in the village of Panabaj but that figure could not be confirmed.

Outside emergency teams, who only began digging Friday, two days after an avalanche of mud, rocks and trees engulfed the village, put the possible death toll at 200 people.

Hundreds of homes at Panabaj were swallowed when a hillside collapsed in downpours in the early hours of Wednesday.

Diego Esquina, the mayor of Santiago Atitlan, told Reuters the death toll at Panabaj might be between 500 and 1,000.

wow, over 18,000 dead in earthquake. Not a good timing for charities, or foreign aide.

Seems like we don't stop making donations this year. I have donated again as those people really need our help. I guess that most of the survivors lost the few things they had...

On another note.

The sitution in Pakistan is getting worse and worse.
More than 54.000 people died already and winter is on the doorstep.
More than 3 million still homeless...

There was a television fundraiser tonight here and more €21 million was collected through private donations (The Netherlands population is 16 million).

I sure hope that proper aid will reach those poor people in time...
