If you haven't set your mind on a specific camera, I would start looking at www.leisurepro.com to get an idea of the models that U/W housing are available for. While not nearly a comprehensive list they will get you started. Another great general resource for info is at www.dpreview.com. Not much for U/W photos but great on the cameras themselves.

I bought a new Sony digital camera before our last trip and also purchased an underwater housing for the camera. It worked great and I could use it in town or at the beach. It's not as fancy as some of the more elaborate underwater cameras I looked at, but it definitely fit our needs. We purchased the 7.2 mp cybershot. We also kept the u/w housing on it at the beach so it wouldn't get sand in the lenses.

I will be looking as well for an digital camera as well as a case so I can bring it underwater. Can't get it now cause my husband just got me a new laptop for my b-day this wednesday but maybe after Christmas I will be looking too. I'l have to research it out. Is it hard to find the cases that go with them?

No, but there are far fewer U/W housings than cameras on the market. You cann't go to Best Buy, get a camera and expect to find a housing. Cannon, Nikon, and Olympus have a much broader range of camera/housing matches than Kodak or Fuji. The smart money says, select a range of cameras that have all the features and performance you want and see if there is a housing for one on your list.

I picked up a Canon A-95 and a Canon housing for it just before heading to Playa last Feb and really like the setup. If you don't feel you need 5 Mega Pixils you should also look at the next model down, A-80 I think it is. I'd check out ebay for a housing, that's where I got mine. If I remember right I got the camera from Newegg.com or one of the other online discounters. At the time Newegg also had about the lowest price on Data Cards. Since the A-95 has been out a while now I'd check on ebay for a used one.

under water camera
I have a Sony DSC-P10 and a Sony housing-Marine Pack MPK-PHA which is made for this model...it is 5.0 mega pixel which will give adequate resolution...it's small , easy to use on land and in the water..don't remeber exact price, but not too expensive.....
The camera itself has a lot of functions including a short video clips... I do have a Sea & Sea camera for sale, like new condition, it uses roll 35 mm film.... I will be in Playa from Nov. 23 to Dec. 21 st if anyone is interested... |

My recommendation would be to purchase a regular digital camera that also has an underwater housing made specifically for it. Many of the Canon digital cameras now have underwater housings available for them. I am a huge fan of Canon products... so my recommendation would be to go with a Canon.

I used to be a "Canon only" camera person...Wouldn't use any other camera...that is until we came to Playa for the first time and my 9 month old Canon digital camera bit the dust. I was mad! So, before our next trip I begged for a new camera with an underwater housing. I searched all over the place and read all kinds of reviews and decided on the Sony DSC W7. I also purchased the underwater housing for it. We took it on a test run to Coz when we went with our kids for a few days and it survived. The UW housing is fantastic! Yes, it costs almost as much as the camera but it was well worth the $$$ I paid for it. It takes 7 megapixel pics and I just reduice the size of them for posting. To see some of the pics I took this year, scan through my trip report for 2005. Hope this helps!

We bought an EWA MARINE underwater bag about $ 280.-...works great on our EOS 350D and much cheaper than a underwater housing for $ 1450,- But we are not divers, when you are a real diver I think you have to buy a underwater housing. the price of the housing depents on what type of camera you have, I only talk about the Canon type's...

I forgot I started this thread! I was actually in Best Buy yesterday. I was looking at the d. cameras and talking with the sales guys there about the cases. It is very easy for them to pull up a computer screen with all the cameras they carried which had that underwater case. I'm looking at cannon $-400 I want a nice one.
