The media always blows everything up, look what they did during Katrina and Rita.
Some of the stuff they reported turned out to be downright lies. Wait till we hear from Steve or Mindbender, Playadel Soul, Heather or James and the rest of the Playa peep family...then we will know what the real story is. There should be some good pictures in the next few days that will gives us an idea of the damage. Has any one heard from M. Holmes ??? He is another trusted source for good information. Hope his Villa made it through ok. |

Our Spanish news station here in LA kind of said the same thing, used the same terminology-- 'total destruction.' I think I will go with JudyBlue on this and say it may not be a literal translation (meaning), but akin to 'Disaster Area' in U.S. terms. IMO...the pictures don't show 'total destruction'. Messy--yes--damage--yes--but the whole entire city doesn't look destroyed. I am sure that if it was really that bad, all the pictures would show the worst of the worst. Remember...it is the media after all...
Not to trivialize...It is bad, yes, but not my personal interpretation of 'total destruction' as I see it through the pictures supplied. (It may be worse, and maybe we haven't seen those pictures yet.) And IMO... I still think we need to support and help the citizens/locals as much as we can...recovery will not be easy for them, however resilient we may think they are. |

I know! It's so frustrating! I've now subscribed to Fox News, MSNBC, BBC, CNN, and many more news channels and they're all the same thing. "hope it stalls longer", "Evacuating Florida", "Stranded Tourists", etc... etc.. etc..
It's a really good thing that we have great sites like this to get actual facts about the area and what's going on. and Kudos to those who aren't cancelling their plans to visit this great area to help out with the recovery process! |

Just tuned into CNN and the Weather Channel. That was a waste of time. However, the news guy in Cancun did a live report. They are still being battered with 100 mph winds. He mentioned something about being able to talk to several hotel zone managers and they said they were hoping to be back open for business by Christmas.
At the earliest. I know that's not real far away, but it's an eternity to these folks who have no means of income in the meantime!

Those of you in the construction business....with all the rain, are the foundations of these buildings at risk? In particular the larger hotels, shops, restaurants, etc. I know there are some buildings just built on a concrete slab. To me, those wouldn't be a worry. And as far as the building codes go, how strict are they about condemning property or will the owners stick a bandaid on and call them "fixed"?

Bottom line is it's too early to know. When the branches are trucked away and the glass is swept up and the streets and buildings are dried out, then we will know. |
