I'm new to this whole "internet forum" thing. Please forgive if I do it wrong. Our son, Izaak A. Ricks aka "Zeke" lives and works at the HOSTEL PLAYA in Playa del Carmen. It's at Ave 25 and Calle 8. We spoke to him via telephone just before Wilma hit. He's a Gringo of Mexican parentage, 5'9" (1.75m) tall, very slim, with an olive complexion, dark hair and eyes. If anyone can forward any information on his whereabouts and condition you will win the eternal gratitude of his worried parents. My personal email is jrix2@juno.com and you may call us at 480-830-1134. We will gladly accept the charges. Thanks.

Well at least from the most recent pics it looks like a lot of downed power lines, trees and flooding....if that is the worst thing I think Playa will bounce back....they did after Emily and I only hope they will rebuild just as well after Wilma.

I am not too worried about buildings. I want to hear that our freinds who live down there are all right. I won't list them, cause someone would be left out, but that is my main area of concern.
So far, to my knowledge, it seems Steve Ryberg and Susie are all right, and we heard from jsil (is that right), on the forum during the storm. Who else have folks heard from or about confirming their "ok-ness"? Frack the freaking buildings, their main purpose over the last couple of days has been to keep people out of harm's way. |

Well folks this is my first post about Wilma. I have been on here with you throughout the ordeal and have great concern for friends we have met in Playa during our last few visits. I hope Itia with Azul Realty is ok and Roberto Vargas a great young man who works in a little shop on 10th.
I emailed them on Wednesday morning and they responded that afternoon - each were still not too concerned at that point but had an evacuation plan. I just hope they got out in time. I tried to explain to them about the potential of a huge storm surge. I may have sounded like an alarmest at the time. I told them with a CAT 4-5 that with a direct hit that anything east of highway 307 would be vunerable to this surge. I was relaying info I had heard from NOAA that surges as high as 7 meters would be possible. Now here we sit in a worse case senario with Playa and our friends... I plan to travel back on November 20 and have no plans to cancel. We have been visiting with Itia about purchasing a condo on 1st and just west of Mamita's and another just North of their and west of cocoa beach. Two weeks ago just after Katrina and then Rita, we decided to back off of the purchase. I told Itia everything in the carrib is to unstable for a purchase, especially a first floor unit near the beach. I wish so much I was wrong about this assessment/timing. Anyway, this Wilma that we have come to hate will not keep us from visiting the place we love and hold so dear. I wish all who choose to live and visit our Playa Del Carmen the very best and hope to see you all there again soon. |

Good night everyone ~ I will be looking forward to reports from Playa tomorrow! Positve thinking! The glass is half full, no pun intended (it is not half full with sea water!) Everyone will come out of this on the other side, I just hope all the beating up is over and the healing is easy and quick. Peace!
