I think too many people are just taking a look at the total mess and concluding things are way worse than it will look like in a couple days. I've noticed almost all very negative horrific reports have been found to be false. Lets just hope that trend continues.

Steve, thanks so much for your post. It's nice to read a positive note amidst all the gloom and doom that we have all been seeing on the news.

Steve, it is great to hear that you and your family are safe and the hotel made it through Wilma. As long as the Cancun airport is open by Sunday, my wife and I are planning on making our first trip down to Playa. Not sure if where we will be staying will be open or not, but we plan on helping any way that we can. Thanks for all your updates and we are sincerely glad that you and your family are safe.

Shammy, thanks in advance for all your hard work and many hours you will be putting in this week. From an individual who started lurking on this site during Emily through now, your knowledge is greatly appreciated. My wife and I look forward to your reports in regards to the potential for us to make our first trip to Playa and help any way we can.

Jim and mommy_dearest, don't worry. Heather is one smart chica and I'm sure she's somewhere safe with others and will contact you as soon as possible. I know that's probably no consolation to your waiting, just wanted to send you some encouragement.

i love playa del carmen

my kids and i were there twice. we were there in jaunuary of 2004 and stayed at the shangri la caribe.
i was so impressed by the people there...they were warm and friendly, and genuine. they represent thier country well.
it was a hard time for us, my husband had died just a few months before, and going there lifted our spirits.
we were there again this last january, and i hope i can visit again someday.
i pray for everyone there. i feel helpless seeing the reports on the devestation. i wish there was a way i could help.
i do know that the spirit and strength you possess will get you through this, and playa will be stronger than ever.

sincerely,
linda

La Rana inhabitants in early 80's

Many years back we weathered hurricane Roxanne and while it was a category 2-3, I think, I do remember that people had the debri and broken tree branches cleaned up the very next day. That PDC spirit!

I have been following the thread about Playa having been "destroyed" and just happened to find a specific reference to it's source in the New York Times:

Moisés Ramirez, the civil defense coordinator of Playa del Carmen, a resort popular with European and American tourists, said his community had been devastated. "Playa is destroyed," he told Agence France-Presse.

Anyway, in that context it does seem that this was an emotional assessment and not an official "declaration". The article did go on to say that 5 homes had been destroyed and another 1,000 damaged.

Hope this helps clarify a little... although we will certainly await the locals reports as they are available for a more accurate viewpoint.
We stayed at La Rana every time we came to Playa for years. We met Jack and Barbara first and several other family members after that. I will keep this short but would like to PM you to inquire about family whereabouts and health. The first time I met Barbara a monkey was wandering in the garden and she shushed me as I entered looking for a room, so we wouldn't frighten it away. La Rana was the end of town in those days. The roads were dusty and we had to go into Cancun to catch a bus to Playa.

this sure has been a strange storm. Looks like Paamul was spared and maybe got the back end of the storm since there wasn't as much sand blown into it. Then again...Tankah got alot of sand blown up or washed up towards the road. Storm surge or tornado perhaps?

Airport will open for evacuation only.

Tomorrow at 6:30 AM a Mexicana Airlines will leave Mexico City with 20 Tons of food and medical supplies to Cancun. Taking back tourists to Mexico City.

There will be several flights like that during the day. Evacuation will be coordinated by the Dirección de aeronautic civil.

This flights wil be during the daylight hours as there are still Electrical problems.

Regular fligths will not resume until further notice.

Terminal buildings are seriously damaged. Airlines are still assesing damage to buildings.

I received the following response after my complaint to the Weather Channel regarding their Wilma coverage:

Jim,

Thank you for contacting The Weather Channel Interactive.

I will forward your comments, expressing your disappointment in our Hurricane
Wilma coverage for the Yucatan Peninsula, to our producers, programming
directors, and tropical weather specialists. We are sorry to hear that you
felt our coverage of Wilma's effects on Mexico was inadequate.

We are always happy to hear from our viewers, and hope you will continue to
watch The Weather Channel for many years to come.

Sincerely,
