New update from the Barcelo Maya:

Barcelo Hotels & Resorts is pleased to report that there are no reported injuries to guests or staff at any of its six properties in Cancun and the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico following Hurricane Wilma.

The Barcelo Maya Beach Resort that includes the Maya Beach Hotel, the
Caribe Beach Hotel, as well as the Tropical Beach Hotel and The Colonial Beach Hotel, which are officially scheduled to open in December, sustained minimal damage and is presently serving the needs of its current guests with limited facilities. However, these four hotels have temporarily suspended new
arrivals until November 10, 2005. Any guests who are booked into these four
properties between now and November 10, will be granted a full-refund. Guests with reservations should contact their travel agent. The hotels expect to resume limited operations following November 10, and travel agents will be
advised of services and amenities at each property as they are restored.
In Cancun, the Barcelo Las Perlas and the Barcelo Tucancun are closed
until further notice. Again, cancellation penalties are also suspended.
Oscar Serrano, Commercial Director for Barcelo Hotels & Resorts said, "The
Company will be issuing regular updates on the status of all six properties."
Serrano added, "At this point it appears that the damage to the Barcelo Maya Beach Resort was superficial and we are optimistic that it can quickly be
repaired. This means that the Resort may even begin accepting new guests
prior to the November 10th date."

I'm printing some updates from certain tour operators (currently Apple is the only one providing early damage assessments) and also letters directly from the resorts themselves.

I STRESS to you that if you are booked with a tour operator, that you will be going by what THEY say, not by what the hotel says.

To give you a for instance, above the Gala says that they will accept guests on Nov. 11th and have limited facilities open, with all facilities expected to reopen by Nov. 25th. Apple said the hotel is not accepting guests through Nov. 30th.

Apple (and this will go for Funjet and all the others) does not want to send people to a resort that does not have the majority of it's facilities open. If someone pays for a 5 Apple resort, they do not want you to end up with 3 Apple resort amenities for the same amount of money as there will be NO refunds due to the fact that there is only 2 restaurants open as opposed to the usual 5 (that's another for instance). Therefore, they have set down when THEY expect the resort to be ready to accept guests and be operating at 100%.

The bottom line, if you are booked with a tour operator, they will dictate when any particular resort will be functional enough to accept guests...so you need to check with YOUR tour operator!

On another note, after speaking with Funjet ad nauseum today ...they are not allowing ANYONE to REbook their trips for travel in November. The first date they will REbook a trip to Cancun or Riviera Maya is on December 1st. They will not allow you to push you trip that was scheduled say, for November 5, ahead to November 25. They have taken all hotels out of their inventory, they simply can't be booked. If you have an existing reservation, then the status of your trip depends on if your airline is flying in on that date.

As per Funjet, "Many hotels in the Cancun and Cozumel area have had significant damage. Information on their re-open dates and status is not yet confirmed, but it is anticipated that most will be closed through fall".

If a particular resort that Funjet carries is not listed, it's status is still pending.
These are preliminary assessments as far as reopening dates, and could possibly change.

RIU HOTELS & RESORTS

Riu 5 stars in Playa del Carmen open again!

Its establishments are ready to receive new guests as of today.
The RIU chain reports that its 5 establishments in Playa del Carmen are already open and ready to receive new guests as of today, 28 October 2005.

These hotels are the Riu Yucatán, Riu Palace México, ClubHotel
Riu Tequila, Riu Playacar and Riu Lupita.

Brigades of repair staff have worked night and day to clean the beach, repair damages to the hotel grounds and reopen the swimming pools, which have been inspected and prepared for use.

The resorts have a stable supply of electricity and hot water and all kinds of food and beverages are available to guarantee a normal all-inclusive stay.

The company warns that, to the contrary, the region around the hotel is logically not as attractive as it was before the hurricane, as the destination is still recovering from the effects of Wilma.

Some RIU resorts are also awaiting small repainting and redecoration work in a few spots, although that does not affect normal holiday enjoyment.

Hotels in Cancún

RIU’s three hotels in Cancun, the Riu Palace Las Américas, Riu Cancún and Riu Caribe, are still closed. The chain is evaluating damages and carrying out repair work. RIU hopes to be able to report how long this work is expected to last on Wednesday.

One week after Wilma’s impact, great advances have been made in restoring the situation back to normal in Cancun, Playa del Carmen and the Riviera Maya.

The coordination and efforts of the Governor of Quintana Roo, central and local Government officials and organizations, private companies and citizens has been impressive and have already lead to the following results :

In 76% of the Cancun area, electricity has been reestablished.

In Playa del Carmen and South of Playa del Carmen electricity has been reestablished.

The expectation is that within two days, the electricity will be restored in the Riviera, Cancun and north of Playa del Carmen.

Status Release
Cancun: Yes, We're Open!
October 28, 2005
Cancun, Quintana Roo MEXICO

As the result on an unprecedented federal and local response to
Hurricane Wilma, the Cancun Convention & Visitor Bureau reports that recovery
efforts are advancing steadily, and that normal resort operation is
resuming in the coming days and weeks.

The CVB reports the following advances as of 12 noon October 28, 2005:

Visitor Evacuations: of the estimated 35,000 tourists that were in
Cancun and the surrounding resorts when Wilma struck on October 21-22, only approximately 2,600 still remain in the area. Nearly all of these
guests will have safely returned home by Saturday, October 29.

Cancun Airport Operations: The Cancun International Airport resumed
operations on Tuesday, October 25. It will operate until October 30 under a recovery/evacuation status, with preferential operations for inbound
supplies and passenger departures. On October 31, normal operations
will resume, with carriers such as Mexicana Airlines, US Air 3000 (Apple
Vacations) and others reestablishing normal service.

Cancun Hotel Zone: The majority of Cancun's 140 hotels and resorts are
recovering from varying degrees of wind and water damage.

Of Cancun's 27,500 lodging units, the Cancun CVB projects the following

(Presidente Inter-Continental, Oasis Viva, Ambiance Villas, Villas Tacul,
Barcelo las Perlas, Blue Bay, Riu Caribe, etc)

Mexican President Vicente Fox has announced federal recovery funds
totally US$20 million for beach recovery and US$10 million for hotel zone
infrastructure restorations. In order to assist small businesses (shops,
restaurants, others) with recovery, NAFINSA (Mexico's government loan
corporation) is providing loans totaling US$340 million.

In an effort to streamline hotel recovery, the Inter-American
Development Bank has announced US$500 million in reconstruction and recovery
loans. This move will greatly facilitate needed repairs and upgrades.

The Cancun Center convention facility will resume normal operations by
November 8, 2005.
