PLEASE check on my wife !!
All,

PLEASE check on my wife, Rand, 2-houses next door from Hotel Inglaterra. It has a white camper in front and a green fence.

I last received an email from her on Thursday about 3PM.

Our house is located around the corner from the Police Station in PM.

The address is SM2 M-20 L8 D-2.

There is a white camper/travel trailer in front of our house. Also a red Jeep Grand Cherokee, hopefully. There is a green fence in front of the house, which is next door to a small market.

Heading into PM toward the ocean from Hwy 307, you make a left turn immediately before the Police Station. Our house is 1/2 block on the right. It is 2-buildings to the south (facing the hotel, to the right) of Hotel Ingleterra, on the same ocean side of the street.

Our immediate neighbors are Rosario & Marco. Their phone number is 011-52-998-206-9093.

I pray she is alright, as well as our 3 dogs and cat (Covey Isle, Bull Halsey, Vida and Jorge). I know how terrified she must be.

Please call me with any news or updates or people I can reach by cell phone or hardline.

Hoping that all is well with you and your family

All my best and thanks for anything you can do.

IMHO the best way to help out is to continue to spend money in PDC. This storm has wiped out jobs and paychecks. Don't let a storm keep you from returning asap to get the economy moving. Patronize the shops, hotels, restauraunts and bars and tip generously. Angle notion and the Mexican version of the Red Cross in Playa are also good bets. If you have close friends who are scraping to get by, you could offer them a small intrest-free micro loan to help them get back on thier feet if you can afford it.
These folks are the best and WILL bounce back!

I second what Steve said.

This was on another board, sounds like a good idea:

(the poster represents himself as a condo-owner in Playacar Phase 1)

"I have been in contact with our property manager and the property engineers all day ( 10/24/05) and the news seems to be much more optimistic than what is being reported by all of the major news outlets. The people of Playa are out in force along with a few thousand members of the military orchestrating a mass clean up.
I asked these same people what we can do to help and the #1 answer was; to provide clothing for those people who have lost everything. SO.... IF YOU HAVE PLANS TO VISIT SOON .... I recommend that each traveler bring at least 10 articles of new or used clothing with them when they visit and donate them to the Red Cross in Playa. They will see to it that those in need receive the help. Pass this on to anyone you know going down and it could mean that tens of 1000's of articles of clothing can make it down over the next few weeks......think adults and children alike. "

I'm thinning out my daughter's tshirt collection if anyone's going down soon.

As per donations to the Red Cross (ie: clothes and such).. according to the Red Cross website, they do want to accept items like this:

http://www.redcross.org/donate/goods/

COLLECTIONS OF GOODS AND INDIVIDUAL ITEMS

Unsolicited, spontaneous donations of goods and services from individuals and community groups, though well intentioned, have hidden costs and pose a number of complications for relief efforts. For these reasons, the Red Cross is unable to accept any large collections of items, such as used clothing, hygiene items, furniture, toys, and canned goods. Nor are we able to accept small, individual donations of these items.

Why does the Red Cross discourage donations of collected goods and individual items for disaster relief?
  • Collections of items require valuable and scarce resources such as time, money, and personnel to sort, clean, and distribute them, which come at the expense of the emergency activities relief workers are attempting to perform. The Red Cross has neither the resources, nor the logistical set-up, to properly handle these types of donations, and therefore cannot accept them.
  • In addition, because we have no way of knowing what spontaneous individual donations or unsolicited collections of items will consist of, we cannot ensure there will be enough of a particular item to distribute it equitably, or if the donated products will even be appropriate for the relief effort.
  • Shipping donated goods is also costly and particularly difficult in the aftermath of a disaster, as inroads into disaster sites are often damaged or impassable, and easily clogged with shipments of non-priority items. The Red Cross makes every attempt to procure items locally to save money by minimizing transportation and storage costs. Local procurement also ensures that the items distributed to disaster victims are appropriate for their culture and diet.
I really want to donate clothing and such, as I do not have much money - does anyone know if they will allow us to drop off the clothing to the Red Cross location in Playa (ps: does any one have the address of this location?) as I do not want to cause them more work than they already have. Also, if the Red Crosses will not accept this, are there any other locations that will... also, my family and I will not be down there until December 3 - do you think that would be too late?

Thanks,
Heather

You might not want to go to the Red Cross, but maybe contact the place where you're staying, and see if there's a way to get it to some of the staff members, most likely (sorry to sound bigoted) the housecleaning staff. A lot of people ask about "small gifts" to leave for the housecleaning staff, so clothing might be a good thing instead. Just for the reasons listed on the Red Cross website, you'll probably have more success keeping it on a small scale.

I'm staying at a small hotel over the holidays (from my lips to God's ears!), and I will contact the owner before I come down to see what she, her family and her staff might need that I can bring.

Message from Lavonna at Angel Notion

I just received this e-mail from a friend of Lavonna's. From this account, the situation seems to be dire for the people -- already disadvantaged -- who are served by Angel Notion. Victoria's e-mail includes suggestions for how you can help the people of Playa through Angel Notion, and I want to add my endorsement -- I have seen this group accomplish great things, and I know it's worthy of your support.

**********************************

Hello Everyone, I just got done speaking with LaVonna in Playa Del Carmen. The devestation is unbeleivable, they are all in desparate need!!! I cant urge you enough, she has helped so many and now she needs our help!! People in playa are blocked in! The roads are washed out from Merrida and Cancun so no way to go north and I beleive they are blocked in the south as well. People will not see electricity for 15 days, no way to cook food, no clean water, everything is closed, looting is going on. They need blankets, food, water, matches, candles and lighters to make fire at night. They need the basics, Rice, beans, they will be running out of gas any day, and most of them have no roofs over their heads. They also need clothing since everything is soaked. And rainy season is in full swing.

Lavonna is requesting for teams of people to come down and help. She is going to try to fly out so she can rally people, goods and funds to help with the devastation. Not sure when she will be able to fly out but you can help by sending funds to the Oregon address:

Ayuda de los Angeles, A.C.
20088 Thomas Dr.
Bend, OR 97702 U.S.A.

Also please tell as many people as possible, and start collecting the basic goods: clothing, food (rice beans, tortillas), blankets, water, candles, matches, lighter etc. We can send them to Oregon in the hopes we can fly them down with the help of an airline, American Air.
Please please keep them in your prayers they really need our help now!!!!

If anyone wants to help in any way or has contacts willing to donate or help in some way..., medical services too,...
the phone in the clinic does work right now 011-52-984-859-2625. She will be running out of pesos on her cell pretty soon and no way to get more so. Also she has no way to check email, so you can contact me at:
victoriasturnATyahoo.com I am in Maine.

Thank you all so much in advance, Sincerely Victoria Griffin Angel Notion 207-872-0138 Making a difference

Clothes Donations, Where can I send them???

My office mates are gathering clothes for adults and kids and infants for me to bring down on the 7th of November. I would also like to ship some down within the next couple days. The mail room manager is talking to his boss to eat the cost of shipping, as a donation, for DHL. Any info for shipping would be very helpfull. Thank You.

Shipping may be problematic, I think that's why James and Anna and Heather are often here asking for mules.
