Can someone tell me an updated situation about Playa Del Carmen and Puerto Aventuras?

My vacation in Mexico will start coming Saturday and I booked to Catalonia Riviera Maya hotel, can someone tell me about the condition of this hotel?

Thank you so much!

I read in a post yesterday that unit 7001 on the ground floor was OK, and had not water damage. This particular unit is on the very end next to the ocean on the South side, and should have had the best chance of damage of any unit. This was good news to me because my employer owns unit 7003.

Chayanne, I just got an email fwded from a friend who owns a condo unit in PA. Although it only describes the condition of her building, perhaps it provides a bit of info about local conditions :

"Dear homeowners and friends,

We got lucky this time! The hurricane inflicted the minimum damage to Puerto Aventuras, that is the first report that Betty was able to give me yesterday, Sunday. We have broken windows in only 2 condos, we lost some trees, but we were expecting the worst after our experience with Emily. Of course there is a little flooding in most of the condos but the maids will start taking care of that on Monday, Betty also reported to me that 4 out of 10 maids showed up to work on Sunday! All the cars are still in Mr. Saenz' bodegas at the poblado and will be back in Puerto as soon as the situation allows it. Please note Betty will not be able to answer e-mails for a few weeks, so please pass this e-mail to as many people as possible. I am still away from Puerto and I will not be able to fly back any time soon, Cancun suffered a lot of damage so did Playa del Carmen, Cancun is flooded and incommunicated, Betty told me that at some points the laggon became one with the ocean! The highway is closed due to the flood and there is no power anywhere... Please be patient, we will take care of your condos. Phones lines are out too!

Rosa Saucedo-Threlkeld"

This is from stormcaribe this morning:

- Power in Playacar!!!
  • From: "Reservation Request Grand Cayman Cruise Excursions" <request at grandcaymancruiseexcursions.com>
  • Date: Mon, 24 Oct 2005 09:46:04 -0500
We are all okay and just got power last night in Playacar!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The storm was wild but we are all okay, we have visited everyone at Las Brisas condo and everyone is okay, some a little shaken up, windows blew out etc. Mike and Crissy have the generator running, cold beer and had the tv on for the kids:-) We drove around yesterday and into Phase 1, all the homes on the oceans north of the reef club have been blown right through and the road is gone in sections. But the house behind seem fine.

They are cleaning the roads today, nice to see people out working to restore the area. The Fat Cat catamaran, once again came through a hurricane without a scratch, it should be the Lucky Cat:-) From what Paul said, many boats where as lucky and sank:-(

I didn't bring my camera so I can't post photos, I will later. Oh, we did got down new 5th and shops at either end of the plaza with Cafe Corazon are totally blown in and I heard that the jewerly store was completely looted:-(

Better run, so much to do and I will post soon.

Oh, to the person that emailed me about the condo she just bought, I drove by and all the units on the top floor were not boarded up and the windows are smashed but the lower units are boarded but may have some water from the upper unit so the quicker someone gets in to drain it, the better it will be for you.

Will keep in touch!

Youth Hostels

I know that there are 5 or 6 youth hostels in PdC. At last report, some of them had folks planning to ride out the storm in them. Any reports on any of them. I'm sure I'm not the only worried parent of a young man or woman traveling through the area when the storm hit.

a pleasant request - can we keep inquiries about people, etc in the proper thread? There is a thread for inquiries about people. I'd like to know when a new post comes up here there is actually new info. Thanks!!!

Debbie, I own 7205 and 7115, and neither of them were damaged. From what I understand from talking with several property managers, the unit under the pool was flooded and there may have been some damage to one other unit. I have been told that none of the other units had glass broken and that most had little or no water inside. If you are on the Xaman Ha Yahoo Group, Chema has posted some photos. You couldn't tell a lot about the Continental Plaza, but it looked ok from what I could see.

airport?

was confused as to where to post this. My flight Thursday as been cancelled. All Usair flights have been cancelled thru Friday. I rebooked for Saturday now. Is there any word at all on the condition of the airport? First I hear there wasnt much damage and then I hear it was severely damaged to someone saying it was still going to open tomorrow by noon. Huh? I would think the severe part must be correct

I own a condo in Hol Ka'an, in Pakal, Playacar Phase 2. I'm on the ground floor! If anyone has any information I would appreciate it. I am in Chile right now and won't be returning to Mexico until next week.

Tank Ha Dive Shop in Playa del Carmen

Just an update here, since I saw Tank-Ha mentioned in one of the postings. I had an email from my friend Desiree who let me know today that she is fine. They are fine there, they have power and water as of today. The shop faired well and the boats are fine. They are planning on resuming dives in 2 days.

I was relieved to hear from her as I emailed her before the storm hit to wish her well. Hope this helps!

Here is the latest news as of Monday, October 24th, 19:00
Hurricane Wilma has hit the Riviera Maya hard. The eye of the hurricane came through Cozumel and Playa del Carmen on Friday evening 23:00. The storm was big and very slow with lots of rain. Large parts of towns and roads where or are still flooded. Today was a beautiful day, sunshine and a flat ocean.

Cozumel
Cozumel took a direct hit. Its been hit hard. The car ferry got immobilized just prior to the storm and stranded in Chinchorro bank, leaving no ferry transport for help or electricity workers to get to Cozumel. Three cruise ship piers have been badly damages or a partially gone. The caletta marina was badly hit with a lot of boats sitting in it. The northern marina was hit hard and is partially gone. I fear for the worst there, I would assume a lot of schools have been hit there too, destroying the infrastructure to teach the kids.

Puerto Aventuras
Puerto Aventuras got hit again as with Emily with a lot of damage, powerloss, trees, to condos, houses and buildings and 10 smaller boats sunk in the marina. I have not been in the Poblado yet but hope that the damage there is not too bad.

Playa del Carmen
Playa del Carmen took a direct hit and its been hit hard. 5th avenue is damaged glass and palapas. Ocean side buildings are flooded with a couple of feet of sand. Mamitas beach club has been hard but will be rebuilt I am sure. In Playacar beach side buildings have lost there foundations, the beach road is gone at parts. Two planes on the airport flipped. A large number of building is damaged beyond repair. The Super San Francisco Supermarket lost a entire wall.

The good news. Since you are reading this newsletter I had to have electricity and internet access. Amazing how fast parts of town got power back. Utility and emergency crews working restless to restore power and water. Security forces showing presence. Neighbors helping each other, restaurants and stores are open. No gasoline though but since we have partially electricity it can't be far away.

Puerto Morelos
Puerto Morelos got hit hard. The road between Puerto Morelos and Cancun is closed since a large section of it is flooded completely. The road from the gas station to Puerto Morelos proper is flooded too. The gas station is working though. Quite a few of the large power towers are broken. A lot of the palapa roofing is gone but restaurants and stores are open

Cancun
Cancun took a direct hit. The airport is closed but is supposed to be back open by Wednesday. We heard reports that the lagoon in the hotel zone connected with the ocean on the locations. We heard as well that there where some riots, martial law has been declared in Cancun and a curfew is in place. The hotel zone is largely damaged and flooded, the inner town areas are damaged too.

Akumal, Tulum
Small damage only, have not been there, heard its still going, they selling gasoline in Tulum

Whats gonna happen ....
I am not the greatest optimist on the planet, but for Tulum, Akumal, Puerto Aventuras and Playa del Carmen I can see its gonna bounce back pretty soon. The way things do improve and the ferocity of the emergency work force to bring it back will succeed pretty fast. There will be areas that will take some more time but in general I am looking optimistic into the future.

ProTec is open, we are diving the caves but the ocean diving is gonna take a while to come back, mostly the boats into the ocean and gasoline.
Just because we got hit by a hurricane we did not disappear, neither a lot of the other dive shops or hotels in the area.

Having just been through the hurricane and its aftermath I am looking far north to Florida where a lot of our friends are just happened to be in the way of windy Wilma. Our thoughts are with you guys and gals.

As always if you are close by and want to chat or give us a call or email please feel free to do so.

Most of the roads are either closed or impassable right now. How could the busses possibly be running?
