This may be a silly question but is there any reason that tour operators can't have flights into Merida airport whist cancun international is repaired?
I've never been so don't the the pros or cons

Usually U.S. carriers have to have prior permission from the government to fly into "new' destination airports. I am guessing that Merida is not a usual destination for charter operators.

Relatives going from Cancun shelter to Riu Tequila

After a hellish few days my children and their family are on a bus now to Riu
Tequila. They were supposed to be married on 10/20 at Riu Americas, the day the hurricanes hit.

I would like to know the following please:

1. Does anyone know which airport is closest for their return to Newark, NJ?

2. Has anyone heard when Continental and Delta will start doing flights back?

3. How operable is the Riu Playa resort?

4. Is the bus ride from Cancun to Playa dangerous?

Thanks so much.

Funny...My agent told me that Air Transat flights were cancelled up until Nov. 9th inclusive. We are leaving on the 10th so he told us that we are missing the cut off date but that things could change. They apparently have their tour reps assessing the situation in Mexico.
I would like to have the option to re-book at another date but it doesn't look that way. Oh well....Will just have to wait and see.

I just spoke with a representative from America West Airlines and they stated America West will not be flying into Cancun until November 16th. They have posted guidelines as to procedures for refunds, reschedules, etc. on their webpage....DANG IT!

I just checked Suncountry's website, they are moving flights to Chichen Itza, including incoming flights. It only shows dates for the end of October though, I don't know about beyond that.

Frontier flights

We are scheduled to fly in to Cancun from Denver this Friday the 28th on Frontier and their website says "Flights pending due to airport conditions." However, I found it interesting to note that they have both incoming and outgoing flights between Denver-Cancun and Nashville-Cancun scheduled for tomorrow the 26th that do not yet say cancelled, though this was not there yesterday so it is updated, I still think it can't be the whole story. To quote from their site:

"And, as many airlines have customers anxious to get home from Cancún, we expect that we may not be able to operate as many flights as we'd like due to the sheer volume of passengers who are ready to leave and the number of aircraft certain to descend on Cancún as soon as the "All Clear" is given. We will have a team of Frontier employees on our first flight from Denver to Cancún to ensure that we handle the crowds as efficiently and professionally as we can given the ordeal our passengers have been through. Rest assured, it is our mission to bring your loved ones home to you as safely and as quickly as we can."

With thousands of stranded tourists, I'm sure they will be ready to have extra planes there to get out and will be less concerned about getting people back in. However, it is fair to note that some people will need to get back in as soon as possible to check on property they own, or to do that for friends and family who own condos, etc. down there. That is now our main goal for this trip - if we can just get there!

Keep us updated via the forum - you folks who live there and have first hand info - IF we get in in the next week, it will help to know in advance what to expect and what kinds of supplies we should bring (though I don't think I could get a replacement mattress or couch in my suitcase).

I assume Delta can always change their minds if the radar and radios aren't fixed in Cancun yet! I found in the past that it's best to not take Delta to seriously.

Here is a paste from the American West site:
Rescheduling Travel to/from Cancun and Cozumel

Passengers originally scheduled for travel between October 18 and October 25, 2005 will be able to make the changes outlined below:
  • For flights originally scheduled for this time period, US Airways will waive the standard change fee, advance reservation or ticketing requirements.
  • The entire itinerary can be moved forward or delayed, up to seven days from the scheduled origination date. The length of the trip cannot be changed.
  • Full value of wholly unused tickets can be applied toward the purchase of a ticket to an alternate destination, with travel to originate within seven days of the scheduled origination date.
  • A reservation can be changed for up to one year from original date of issue as long as the ticket is reissued by November 16, 2005
According to the website and my TA it only applies to those who are traveling up until the 25th of Oct. Of course this may change but it is the only place I see November 16th mentioned. The underlined portions are what have been added to their website in the last 24 hours. Maybe the agent was confused or maybe they haven't posted it yet?

Chunkydee, the more and more I read from other airlines, the more I believe my "helpful" customer service rep may have been confused with the whole 16th thing. Will probably have to call back again and try to talk with someone else, unless someone else calls and gets a better response than me. Thanks and still hoping to be putting home a few drinks by Sunday night in PDC.

I talked to a rep with Usair about an hour ago. I am due to fly out on the 29th. As of 5 pm, my flight had not been cancelled YET!. I just talked to my husband in Playa at the Beer Bucket(damn him)and he said someone told him the earliest he could book a ticket out of Cancun was next Thursday.
