Maybe someone like Shammy can let us know what is the thought process for the fact that the dates getting changed.
US airlines is simply giving people the option of rebooking without charge and even flying into one airport and out of another. The main announcement is not intended to indicate flights are canceled it is simply another option for those that want to do something different.

Mindbender's report #2 said that the busses were back in the station and the road was open, but didn't know the condition of it. In Steve's Playa Maya thread, a few pages in, he says: "Road to Cancun still has some water spots but buses are running and people are getting through. Some of our guests both went and came back today, trying to get out at the airport, and several more workers were able to arrive today."

Sounds like good news!

I have not heard anything....But I would think they are pretty close.....Its not going to be long before they open the Airport up to more then military, relief, and evacuees....And everyone starts heading down there agian....Did not hear of any busses being damaged so I guess they are just waiting for the roads to be cleared and the station in Playa to be cleaned up a bit....Or maybe just for people to get down there to fill them up....I would think that collectivos and taxis are already moving IF the roads are opened.....Am very excited about checking out the new beach in Tulum....Have an email in to the place we stay down there to get there view on it.....Hope to hear back from them today sometime....

Group Trip to Playa on Sat 11/5

Hello, I had convinced my group of 30 to go to Playa next weekend staying at the Royal Porto Real, 100% operational today. But when they saw the picture of Terminal one they were concerned and decide they wanted to rebook for January. Suntrips cancelled all their flights into Cancun out of Denver & Oakland until December 11th, so that concerned everyone. Suntrips probably went by what the media was saying and made a stupid decision. I can't imagine what you that are suppose to travel this weekend must be going through, or what Shammy must be going through as a Travel Agent. I too sell travel part-time, only to Mexico, so this is very upsetting to me.

Susan from Denver

Lot's of us remember when the Cun airport had just a rinky-dink terminal. What matters the most now is getting those who have been stranded home.
After that, as long as radar and communications and fuel are in place, I would think you'll see lots of daily flights regardless of the condition of the terminal itself. Wouldn't be suprised to see some sort of tempory set-up in place in just a day or two more.

It seems to me that a lot of the Hotels are or will be up and running in a week or so. Some longer I am sure, especially in the Cancun area. What is going to hold things up will be the airport. I am hoping they can get the radar and lights going so they can do more than visual flying. Unless that happens, they won't be flying planes in with tourists on them. As far as the terminals go, I would think they can set up a tent and some fencing to get by until they are fixed. I am hoping this is what happens. I am supposed to fly in on the 13th & stay at the Royal Porto.

Frontier

Frontier has brought several flights out of Merida so far, has 2 leaving Cancun today, and 3 more leaving Cancun tomorrow. My thoughts and prayers are with those who are finally headed home after one hell of a trip.

Friday and Saturday (28th and 29th) Frontier flights from Denver to Cancun were just canceled and I heard Sunday and Monday are booked even though they are not conformed to be open for passenger flights by then. We have to re-book, and unfortunately waited until we have few choices, but we'll be there as soon as possible. Just found out that the Chac-ha condos are seriously wet so we'll have a little work to do - not as much as you all have already done around PDC! It'll be all good sooner than most people think...

…..and don’t forget Cancun Airport is privately owned and managed. They are very interested in resuming their revenue stream (and not going out of business). And they are very interested to make sure you the visitors are happy and confident that they have a safe and user friendly operation. This is the only airport in the world that has approached me directly in that regard. They are also facing competitive pressure with the threat of a new airport in Q Roo (that they may not get to own). I can’t think of anything that would be a greater incentive that what they are dealing with today. I bet they come through. I believe I was too conservative when I bought my ticket for a Nov 2 touch town. I bet they’ll be bragging about incoming passengers before the end of October.

That's exactly right. Until they get word from the Mexican authorities, they can't keep a flight schedule that is guaranteed to stick.

confused

Well for the second time in a week we have had our flights cancelled... were supposed to be flying in on the 30th with Thompson so when we called around we found another flight with American Airlines via Miami more than double the original flights but as the girl was sorting our details a guy next to her said that he had found another cheaper flight with Monarch and it wasnt til he gave the details that we realised it was not only the same flight they had just cancelled us on but in fact the same seats but thru a different tour operator !!! so at the moment still hoping to be there soon but that may change again tomorrow

Postponing Incoming passenger flights to Cancun

Just got off the phone with frontier (I'm with you on the minute by minute - it's frustrating, but probably for everyone - passenders, airlines and TAs included). They said they will not fly more passengers in till they get everyone else out and the new date is 11/1 fortheir first incoming passenger flights. I don't know if each airline has a seperate policy, or if it's just based on how many people/flights to get the poor stranded folks out, or some other factor, but everyone seems to have differing info from each airline. it's hard to keep up! The airport still just says open to very limited operations. Any other suggestions on where to look for accurate up to date info?

Well, it sounds like it's time to make 1-2-3 operational. Shammy, please start booking passengers for the balloon. We won't guarantee any particular arrival time, but will promise them that it will be a most interesting ordeal--sorry, I meant adventure. Money is no object. We'll accept gold bars, Rolex(s) with precious stones, or gallery certified Picassos. As usual, you will recieve your standard commission of a Playa-Maya coaster and an autographed photo of James in Coba. However, because of this special situation, we will also provide you with a Jimmy Buffet margarita at the watering hole of your choice in Playa.
