Latest word from the US Dept of Defense website NOTAMS (notice to airmen)...

Cancun airport opened to VFR recovery flights only from Oct 25-28.
Runway lights, radar, frequencys, approach facilities unusable until Oct 31.

Cozumel airport opened to VFR flights only from Oct 24-27.

Anything AFTER that time will depend on how long it takes to get everything fixed for commercial traffic.

I will try and update as I hear that things have changed.

Air Transat (our charter carrier) has cancelled all flights into Cancun until November 10, at least.

Just read that there is 2 km line of people who want to get into the airport. They are letting in people with tickets only though. Sounds like a mess...

I doesn't just sound like a mess...it IS a mess. Trust me when I say that getting people OUT is ALL they have on their mind right now. While they want travelers to come back, and to bring their tourism dollars back with them, that is just not the most important task at hand. After being stuck in Mexico for almost a week, these people need to get home, and that's is what they are trying to do. If you just sit and think about what it would be like to get 35,000 people out ASAP, while dealing with limited facilities, damaged equipment, dangerous roads...well...need I say more?

I was suprised that some people actually are able to leave from Cancun at all. The first german tourists which arrived back home today were flown out of Merida (which is where most of the 8 scheduled rescue flights to Germany will leave).

Here is a pic of the airport... (had seen a similar one the last days but back then it was said it was an office building)...

Edited: the pic most probably was not from the airport... (and I don't wanna spread rumours - too much wrong stuff being told anyway... )

Someone posted that picture earlier saying they had found it on a news site labelled as a collapsed commercial building, but they figured it had to be the airport because of the Cancun sign. I found the same picture on a news site yesterday, but zoomed out further... it was labelled as and did look like a car dealership. That would then make the sign make sense... many dealerships are named after the city they are in.

Makes sense Flash, the white and maroon vehicles are very similar and none of the vehicles have licence plates. But maybe you don't have front plates in Mexico?

It was me wondering whether this was the airport when the other pic was posted...

Just checked the source I was given for that pic myself (it's from the BBC website in the UK) it doesn't say that this is the airport... sorry not to have checked that before...

Great news! Thanks for all your hard work Shammy! Still holding onto a glim bit of hope that we will be in PDC on Sunday even if we have to bring a tent.
