Iberostar Tucan/Quetzal damage?

If anyone has any information on how Wilma affected Tucan/Queztal I would appreciate it. Hoping to still go the first week of Nov, so any info on the resort and downtown would be greatly appreciated!

I have a contact at the Tucan whom I will contact by e-mail for info, and how things went.
I don't suspect a swift answer, though, 'cause that person is obviously having a lot on her mind and probably not in the mood for extensive reporting.
I will get back when she DOES have info.

Oh, and btw: there's a thread specifically for damage info on AI resorts. Please do keep an eye on that one.

As per Liberty Travel agent in NYC, Riu Palace Mexico is not doing Business until at least December 1.

A reason to hope?

I have no news on Allegro Playacar, but the news from the Riu hotels is good. (Expecting to be open within a week http://www.riu.com/index.php go to press services, then releases) As you can see below the RIU hotels are quite close- I have a honeymoon planned at Allegro Playacar in December so I'm hoping things are well there.
egro Playacar, but

Just because they are located closeby each other, doesn't mean much. The Allegro did not have the protection of a larger beach area, as the Riu's did. As of two weeks ago when I was there, the ocean was only a few feet from the wall that held the pool area. If the waves were breaking as big as they say they were, that puts the ocean right on top of some of the resort, and certainly the entire pool area.

Just have to hang on for more info, much has not be said yet.

The RIU chain hopes to have its 5 resorts in Playa del Carmen in the Mexican Caribbean up and running and ready for new guests within a week.

To the contrary, the 3 RIU hotels in the city of Cancun will need a few more days for repairs.

The situation in Playa del Carmen returned to normal and yesterday, Sunday, guests returned to their rooms, where the electricity and hot water supply has been restored.

A restaurant and a bar are open for service in each of RIU’s resort in Playa del Carmen.

The guests at the Hotel Viva Maya who were temporarily lodging at other RIU resorts have already returned to their own hotel.

On the other hand, the first guests have begun to swim in the sea opposite the RIU resorts in Playa del Carmen. Normalisation is in full swing. The sun has come out and the rubble outside the hotel grounds is being cleared away.

RIU’s guests are calm, in good spirits and even slightly euphoric after seeing the sun once again, in the knowledge that the hurricane is now just an unhappy memory.

As soon as the roads are ready for traffic, tourists will begin to come home through the Merida airport, probably as of Tuesday afternoon, European time.

That's Liberty Travel, and they don't have the full picture yet, no travel agents have anything that could be considered to be reliable information at this time...so I take that as "personal opinion".

The Riu's are putting updates on their web site.

Yes, it says they "hope" to have the Playacar resorts up and running, and I think that's a very optimistic view. But only until RIU comes back with a true damage assessment can anyone say that they will be closed until "such and such" a date. I would imagine that they are still checking things out and getting the full scope of the damages.

As far as a wedding in two weeks, that might not happen so if possible, you should at least look into another resort that might end up to be open, or a new destination completely...just to have a back up course of action.

postponed wedding

Hello. I have been monitoring this site since Emily and have greatly appreciated all the information.

I am supposed to be married at the Riu Palace Mexico on Nov 4th. We were scheduled to fly out tomorrow on american airlines. We had decided to still go down and start pumping some money into the economy. We had called down there today and spoke with the staff. They commented that we would not be allowed into town since it is unsafe, but to come on down.

We just received notification that our flight was cancelled. Looking for an alternative flight. The rest of our wedding party was not scheduled to start arriving until Saturday and then throughout the rest of the week.

Staying hopelessly optimistic outside Chicago. We have traveled extensively throughout MExico and this is our favorite area. That's why we chose to be married there. The beauty and the people of the area are unsurpassed.

There are about 30,000 people who can NOT get out of Cancun Airport right now. NO ONE is flying anyone INTO Cancun this week as a tourist. Starting today (Tuesday) they are bringing in planes loaded with supplies and then taking those tourists out. There is no sense looking for another airline to get you there this week when they have their hands full just trying to get people home. The airport is severley damaged as well, and simply can not accomodate visitors until it is back in order...and at this point, no one knows when that will be.

This also makes no sense:

They commented that we would not be allowed into town since it is unsafe, but to come on down

By "town", do you mean Playa Del Carmen, or do you mean Playacar?
Highway 307 is closed right now, there is a lot of flooding on the roadways in certain spots. But since you can't fly in...no point in going on with that.

What the situation will be over next weekend, or into next week...no one knows right now. But sadly, you're not going to be able to fly out until at least the weekend...if even then. Just have to stay in touch with the airline to see when they will resume normal flight operations.
