The RIU chain hopes to have its 5 resorts in Playa del Carmen in the Mexican Caribbean up and running and ready for new guests within a week.

Yes, it says they "hope" to have the Playacar resorts up and running, and I think that's a very optimistic view. But only until RIU comes back with a true damage assessment can anyone say that they will be closed until "such and such" a date. I would imagine that they are still checking things out and getting the full scope of the damages.

As far as a wedding in two weeks, that might not happen so if possible, you should at least look into another resort that might end up to be open, or a new destination completely...just to have a back up course of action.
Your right on the above. Travel agent did say they were getting reports directly from agency field reps down there. However, I suppose this was their assessment and not Riu Palace. We'll look on - thanks.

Royal Hideaway Damage????

We are curious to hear or see anything about the Royal hideaway. We arrived there on the 18th and had one beach day before being evacuated, but Royal dropped the ball so we rented a car and drove to merida, and when that airport closed we rented another car and drove to campeche to catch a flight to meixco city, then to dallas then to new york. Royal kept saying that we would go back to the hotel after this was all over, I doubt that very much.

It's just a little too soon to tell, IMO, although it seems to be that PdC in general did not suffer as much damage as news coverage wanted us to believe.

Meanwhile you may want to keep an eye on this thread:
Wilma - All Inclusive Resorts - Damage Reports

Shammy is an insider on AI's (she's a T.A.) and working very hard to collect as much info as possible to post it in the mentioned thread.

Cripes...I gotta vent!

This is becoming a problem in many threads, but I'm using this as an example.

ONE hour before you asked this question, I posted what you see right ABOVE that question, and was in response to someone asking about the Riu Palace.
THREE hours and two posts before THAT, I posted MORE information...saying that we do NOT have any other updates other than what is being posted on RIU.com. Babaloo alos posted the quote from RIU.com word for word. ALL this was current information.

Does ANYONE read the answers that some of us are taking the time to type? Or do you just ask away without ever reading, and expect people to REpost the SAME exact answer that is right there in front of you!

*sigh* Very frustrating indeed.

PLEASE...read what's on this site and IF you don't see your question answered, THEN ask. But don't ask a question that is already clearly answered because you then make all the people that are taking the time to post feel like they are typing para nada!

Thank you.

It's NOT already clearly answered. Clearly what's on here is not the same info. that's posted elsewhere, and as such
I'm looking for as much info. I can to make an informed decision - thanks.

First of all, I hope you don't think I'm refering to your question, because I'm not. I quoted the post that got me riled up.

But...I'm sorry to say that infomation about the Riu Palace is AS clear as it can be right now because all we have is what's coming directly from the RIU web site. THAT information IS on this thread (which makes it clear to me)...and I simply don't know what else you are looking for that will make it MORE clear for you. You yourself posted that Libery Travel, who probably has no more information than anyone else right now, said that the Palace is not doing Business until at least December 1. Maybe it's best to have them clear it up for you since perhaps they do have more information?

Palace 1104-I know how you feel! I am supposed to be married at Riu Palace on 1105 and we have 60 people coming. I received an email from the spa at the hotel and they said they would be fully operational by 1102 (which is when we had an appointment). I have not been able to get thru to the actual hotel-only the main Riu number. The staff at the main Riu number said the hotel is fine...but the question is the airport...have you talked to anyone? COnt'l said they are resuming flights tomorrow but who knows that could change!

Club el Mandarin

Does anyone have updates on Club El Mandarin ? I am one of 13 booked for late December but would like to know what kind of damage they have sustained. Haven't paid for full holiday yet and would like to know if we should consider other alternatives now. This trip has only taken us 18 years to put together and we were all so looking forward to being together in the Riviera Maya.

All I have heard so far is that "El Mandarin is in Puerto Morelos, one of the hardest hit areas. Second hand reports from Secrets Capri, which is right nest door do not look promising..they sustained heavy damage. I can't imagine El Mandarin was any different. But...this is second hand info".

Any news you could give would be appreciated.

If anyone has been there, I would love to get some feedback as to their experience. Is it a good spot for families with teenage kids ? Food good ? Service good ? Are there any items we can be bringing from home to leave for the resort staff or local children that would be a special treat for them ? Our group has been trying to research the resort for weeks now and haven't seen any input on Club el Mandarin at all on any sites we have found so far.

I feel bad asking about my own vacation plans while i know so much damage has been done by this hurricane. My thoughts and prayers are with the people living through this terrible storm, and wish you all good health and prosperity in the future.

hi palace1105

I was so glad to see your post. I was not asking for more information about the RIU palace. I have been in contact with them, monitoring this board, and rusty's unofficial riu website, and apple, and the cancun airport.

My fiance was able to get through on 011-52-984-877-4200. They told him that everything is fine, the town (Playa del Carmen) is unsafe right now. I am sure they did not mean anything about the people. They just want to look out for stupid people that would be trampling through broken windows, etc.

When we originally booked our trip, they told us the judge would be on vacation so we needed to be there on Oct 25th to process our paperwork. We thought- no problem- we'll just go down before hand and stay through the 8th. But, when I saw your post, you said you are going down on Sunday. Therefore, you would have a judge available on Monday to process your paperwork? And I am thinking that as long as we are there by Monday- we should be fine?
I am not trivializing what has happened to the area. I have been very scared to get flamed by everyone if I even talk about my wedding. But everyone is safe, and houses, trees, etc. can be rebuilt and regrow. My travel agent is telling me that we need to go down (us and our 20 other wedding guests) to pump some money into the economy. A lot of people are just going to cancel and take their money elsewhere.
I am just waiting as of now. If you hear anything, let me know and I will let you know. IN THIS THREAD OF COURSE!
I hope you and I will be having a drink together next week.
SUpposed to be doing that right now. Our travel agent is looking for a flight on Fri (I know people have said it is useless, but I can always hope).

have you been in contact with the airport? The lady from Riu (the main number) said that the airport opens back up tomorrow at 3pm. I asked her where she got that info and she said it was official..not sure what that means. You were flying American? Cont'l shows a flight going to Cancun at Thursday 3pm..and yes if you get there Monday that is more than in enough time-I think it is just 3 days prior--I think that is what I was told. I don't think the hotel is the problem..it's the airport...and YES we will have a HUGE drink together!

Sorry I got your name wrong,playa1105.

I knew we only had to be there 3 days, but they told us the judge was going to be on vacation until wed (the 2nd)?, so we would only have thurs(3rd) & fri (4th)count as days there. and the days needed to be consecutive so we had to be there 3 days before the judge left on vacation. It didn't make sense to me, but I spoke in Spanish and English to them and it was the same. But, I am hoping that since all this happened, they would process our paperwork, etc. even if we were not there on Wed the 25th. So that is why I have been freaking out even more because we have not heard any official word that if we come down there we still would be able to get married.

We are totally able to roll with the flow, but the reason everyone in our family is coming down (and friends) are to see us get married. It will be the first in Mexico for many and the first time in playa for others. (And of course mine and my fiance's first marriage-AND THE LAST! ha, ha) Def won't be the last time in Playa, though.

Our travel agent (from apple) says she does not believe the airport will b e open tomorrow.

Thanks for letting me know what you know. We were all packed and ready to go to the airport in a couple hours when we received notification of the flight cancellation last night at about 9:30. Right now, we are living out of our suitcases so we can leave at a moments notice. Fiance went back into work today so we can have some more money to spend when we get down there.

Believe me I know what you are going through. When I talked to the Riu lady, I asked how the Judge was etc...she said he would be doing weddings this Thur-Sat..so I am assuming he is not on vacation. That is weird though because I was never told that. But I don't think you need to worry about that... I wish there was a contact or something to find out more info on the CAncun airport. I still can not get thru to the actual hotel either...

Wilma-Large Hotels/Resorts Info and Damage reports!

I just talked to the manager at Fisherman's Village and the news was not particularly good. He said the snack bar and pool "are gone" and indicated that the property was awaiting a damage assessment from the corporate managers in Cancun (they have 2 other properties in Cancun so I am sure they have their hands full there anyway). He said he had been instructed not to give out information (he resisted giving me what little I got) to guests yet and that the reservations center (also in Cancun) for all the Sunset properties should be up and running in the near future to give out further information. I could only get out of him that the 1st floor of the property had been hit hard but not whether any structural damage had occurred.

We are scheduled to be there at Christmas and being there in PDC without the pool doesn't bother me if they can get the restaurant back up and running. They are industrious folks down in PDC and will move heaven and earth to get it back up and running I am sure.

Are you trying the number I put on the thread? I am certain that is the number he called- can't ask him right now (he's at work). But that is the only number he had access to because that is on the tickets and I never gave him another one. I highly doubt he searched for another one.

Have you been to the cancun airport website?
