Yes. They don't have much information about the actual damange to the properties. I did see a pic on another site that someone had posted that showed one of their sign's toppled over.. Their last post was yesterday, stating that people were returning to the hotel (not sure which one).

Yesterday, RIU Hotels’guests began to return home from the Mexican Caribbean Airport of Merida in the Yucatán peninsula.
The Cancun Airport is expected to reopen within one or two days

THIS IS THE INFO ON THE RIU SITE FROM YESTERDAY (25TH) - I WAS HOPING FOR SOMEONE THERE TO POSSIBLY HAVE SEEN IT. I'M AMAZED AT ALL THE GREAT INFO THAT HAS BEEN GIVEN ON THIS SITE. HOPE EVERYONE IS DOING WELL.

I recall having seen a post on one (or more) of the RIU's, but I just can't find it.
Sorry 'bout that...

We arrived at the RIU Palace 2 days after Emily "visited" in July. They were up, running and the staff proved themselves worthy of every possible accolade. I have no doubt the same will be true this time.

In my opinion, if management says that the facility is open and accepting guests, then sanitation concerns have been resolved. BUT, as the little signs say on the mirrors in the bathrooms: Don't drink the water! Besides that, it's kinda fun brushing your teeth with Tequila or Rum.

Gala Playacar resort in playa del carmen??

This is the resort you are staying at the Gala Playacar in Playa del carmen? If so, you stayed there during Wilma? We are supposed to come down Nov 8-13. I am not sure weather to change and go somewhere else or wait and see. Is the pool and beach OK?

We walked all down the beach as far as we could. Galas beach remains the best with the most sandy beach. The further north the more destruction with some resorts having rooms completly into the ocean and their beach erroded away. Will try to post pictures when we get home!
Adios!!!!"

Iberostar Beaches

Received news from our fantastic TA that we have been cancelled for our wedding scheduled for the 22 Nov, 2005 at the iberostar Beaches. There was a little stress as AirTransat wanted to send their own people to make an assessment. I think that changed after viewing this post:

IBEROSTAR RESORTS

Dear Travel Partners,

I am pleased to inform you that all of your passengers made it through Hurricane Wilma and were able to return to their rooms on Sunday afternoon. Our Resorts in the Riviera Maya had electricity throughout the whole time of the Hurricane and we continue to have power in all of our Resorts, but this is coming from our generators and not from an external power source. We are still trying to find out when we will have power again, but it is still too soon to get a definitive answer. We also have plenty of water and food which should last us until this Friday. As you can imagine all supplies are being rationed out. In regards to the Iberostar Cozumel, we still have not received word as to how severe the damages are and the Resort was evacuated completely during the Hurricane.

As a result of Hurricane Wilma’s impact, our Hotels have sustained extensive damages that are causing us to not be able to accept any new passengers for at least a month at all Iberostar Paraiso Resorts and a minimum of 3 weeks at the Iberostar Tucan / Quetzal. At this time we cannot give specific information as to the exact damages, but we are in the process of assessing the damages and will send you a detailed report as soon as we receive this information from our Hotels. We currently have no phone communication with the Iberostar Paraiso resorts, but the Iberostar Tucan / Quetzal continues to have phone service.

As we are assessing the damage, please ensure that effective immediately you place all of our Hotels on stop sale until further notice. All passengers traveling during this time are allowed to cancel with no penalty.

Myself along with our Owner, our CEO, our Executive VP and our Chief Architect will be traveling to Cancun within the next few days to determine exactly what it will take to get our Resorts back up and running and our strategy throughout the coming months.

Thank you for your continued cooperation during these trying times and for all your support, thoughts and prayers.

Sincerely,

JOHN LONG
V.P. Sales & Marketing
Iberostar Hotels & Resorts

We have changed to the Bahia Principe Akumal and are hoping we can make all the wedding plans in 2 weeks if there is an opening. Other than than I guess we get someone to rent a row boat and as the Captain they can marry us just of the beach

Here is a post from tripadvisor about a person who just returned from the Tucan. Please keep checking because he keeps writing more info. Good to hear from a person who saw the resort first hand.

I just got back from the Tucan last night (10/25). We were one of the lucky ones that had Apple and got out yesterday. The Tucan took some damage, but we were told they were opening in 2-4 weeks, which I can believe. One window-encased restaurant is completely damaged. The roof damage over the lobby was already being worked on while we were there. Most of the damage, however, was cosmetic. Trees ripped up, no leaves left on the trees in the jungle. But the monkeys are still there, peacocks still there, etc. The staff is amazing - brought us food during the hurricace with smiles on their faces. The buffet is open, food is good.
Playa has damage, but not horrible. Don't plan on visiting Senor Frogs - it's a mess. Carlos and Charlies is already open. Most of the little shops in the touristy part are already open.
If you can go after they re-open, please do. They need all the tourism money they can get right now!

Another post from that board:

We were all on the beach on Monday. Some of the palapas (I think that's the name - the thatched umbrellas) are damaged, but the beach is beautiful. It was packed on Monday. The pools have a lot of debris (thatching from the roof, etc.) in them, but they are already trying to clean them up.

www.applevacations.com now shows, as of this evening, all iberostars including tucan/quetzal being closed until 12/1. I hope in the coming weeks this will change
