If you have the time and don't mind a windy road Hwy 1 north of SF is about the most beautiful coastal drive in the world. You will stll cut inland and a see the avenue of the giants (big ass redwoods)
You will miss the majority of the California wine country this way, but its worth it. You can take a short side trip off Hwy 1 and go up the Anderson valley ( or any of the other valleys) If you have extra days do both Hwy 1 and the Napa Valley.
