With Mamita's and Tukan's Underconstruction...Where right now???
Okay, Here is a question for you that "Have Arrived" and walked the beach area in the last few days. (Maybe Mindbender).
With Mamitas and Tukan on the mend....Where can we go right now and simply walk up to a beautiful repaired beach area and have services like cervesa, towels, chairs, palapa's etc? Is there anywhere? Thanks! |

If you look at Mikey's first set of Playa photos, you'll see that quite a few beach club/bars are up and running in the area between the two ferry docks ... and you'll see that the beach is much sandier than it used to be.
I've never been, but I'm guessing that the Blue Parrot would be closest to the Mamita's vibe. El Pirata is right next door, and more relaxed. Playa Maya would offer a higher level of service, if you need towels and the like. But you can't walk up and down the beach without there being a place to lie down and imbibe. It's all good. |

So I guess I was not aware that people could just walk up off the street in these area's: Parrot, Pirata, and Playa Maya and rent a lounger, Palapa and have drinks brought to them on the beach.....Is this true? Am I understanding this correctly now??? Thanks for the info |

At many of these places, you don't even have to rent the chair. As long as you are buying food and/or drinks there, they will let you use their chair for free. We spent a couple of wonderful afternoons at El Pirata and had two loungers and an umbrella most of the day. We just paid for our beers and snacks.

In the area that you are talking about, I don't know of any place that only allows it's guests to use the restaurant, chairs, etc. There are fees of course, but you can walk up to most (if not all) and pay for those services. Playa Maya's pool is for guests only. El Pirata is the only place that I know of that doesn't charge for their chairs if you eat and drink. Have fun!
(Mamita's is looking better each day by the way!) |

SarahB - Keep the reports comming. Wilma repair & clean up progress reports are encouraging.
What you call El Pirata I might be calling Cpt. Dave's so foregive me if I repeat. """"El Pirata is the only place that I know of that doesn't charge for their chairs if you eat and drink.""""" At the beach on 4th is Captian Daves, CoCo Fizz and another beach bar and eatery. I know the one I frequent (Captian Dave's) only charges for what you consume. I believe the other two are the same. I have sat there all day while going through a few buckets of cervesa's and only paid for the beer. The total bill would buy several loungers but I didn't go there to buy a chair. Just returned from playa.. and all i can say is go go go!!! If you thought about canceling don't do it!!! It reminds me of before all of the consturction. However, they are so thankful for those who came right after the Hurricane, everywhere we went, people were thanking us for not canceling.. Well in response.. currently, Tukan isn't charging for a chair at all... and are offering some cold drinks and chips. Mamitas, well the deck is totally gone, and with a good portion of the beach gone infront of it, its going to be awhile before its back to normal, but there is an army of folks workin on both places... the rest of playa 5th street to be specific... is like at 98% up and running, its only the lack of vegitation or stripped trees that is kinda weird, but really things are great... I go to playa 3-4 times a year, and if it wasn't for the internet and tv... You would arrive and only say, what happened to the trees, the mexican people are oh so reziliant. So come to playa my friends... if you want to help.. go and enjoy!!

Flyingcouple, who knows when they will open...dates are never definite even if they give one! My guess (only my guess!!) is that they are rushing to be back in business by high season like everyone else. I know that photos of these places taken recently don't look great, but compared to how it looked right after Wilma things have drastically improved! Last edited by SarahB; 11-09-2005 at 01:27 PM.. |
