I'll have to find the site again, but it does say it leaves from Playa del Carmen on Wednesdays.

It is a 4 dollar bus ride to Cancun and a 3 dollar taxi to porta juarez and a 3 dollar ferry to Isla and after you have done this you will wish you haven't wasted a day in paradise at Playa but then again I might be loyal but I really have done this.

But the boat STILL leaves from the pier in Cancun. Just like Laura, I don't know of any tour boats to Isla Mujeres that leave directly from Playa. When they offer the trip from "Playa del Carmen and the Mayan Riviera", the added amount they charge is for the bus ride from your hotel TO Cancun. |

My cousin and I did that same type of evening party boat excursion back in 1990 when we stayed in Cancun (boat from Cancun to Isla, party on the beach, games, drinking, a good show). It was a fun night and we had a lot of laughs. Now, whether or not it's worth the $75 pp...... For some it probaby is, for some it probaby isn't. I think back then it was something like $50 pp.

I think we have to be attentive to why they are interested in going, and will Isla be able to deliver that experience post-Wilma. Poke around in the Wilma section to get a sense of how the rebuilding process is going there.
If you're going for snorkeling, I would save the time/money and go down to the Akumal area. (I would spew that opinion even pre-Wilma) If you're going to enjoy the vibe, fine, but as someone pointed out -- that's a lot of travel time and money to get there for what would have to be a very short day. The more we go down to the MR/PDC area, the less ambitious our side-trip plans become. For example, we have yet to get over to Cozumel, yet to go to Coba, yet to see Chichen-Itza. Yes, we would like to see them all one day, but we have never felt short-changed by deciding to go for quicker, easier, sightseeing options (including none at all) |
