One of my 11 year old dogs was crate trained as a puppy, then for years did not use the crate until she decided she wanted to be the alpha in the house (and fight with the real alpha dog!). So for the last 4 or so years she is in the crate again when I am not home. She loves her crate, it is her safe place! I do not think dogs are too old to be crated even if they are not used to it. It takes time but can be done!
