Baked Goods

While in Playa last week (it seems like MUCH longer ago than that now...especially since my high temp today is supposed to MAYBE hit the freezing mark) we found a little hole in the wall market on 5th way on the South end near the square and the ferry dock. Right inside the door were these racks of pastry type things with various kinds of meat and cheese in them. Further back there were more racks full of sweet pastries, cakes and such. These things were fantastic! We picked up three different (very large) pastries for the next morning and two drinks and the total was only 23 pesos!

What is the name of this place? Also, can anyone give me the names of some of these pastries (I know one was a spice cake type thing with raisins and one was a long 'sweetbread' with a little ribbon of chocolate through the middle) so that I might know what to look for here in Columbus. There is a large hispanic population here and I'm betting I can find a cool bakery if I only know what to look for.

Sounds like it could be Super Panaderia which is located on Av 5 between Calle 2 y 4. JAH started a thread specifically about Panaderias (bakeries) that might answer some of your questions about the different types and names of the various baked goods... click here.

A much, much better bakery is around the corner, on Juarez and 10th. El Pan de Carmen, or something like that. And yes, we did try both places.
I liked that spice-cake thing, too. Such great stuff with coffee.

Thanks Denisea...I think that's the place. And thank you MWC...as if I needed a reason to come back to Playa. Now I have one more.

We hit that bakery almost every night... a big bag of goods for only a couple of dollars, and then we'd have a dessert/snack for the evening and breakfast for the next morning.

Yeah, same here. Planning more of the same (mindful of our bathing suits, ) this Xmas. Bringing a coffee maker with us, as an early morning cuppa is all I was missing last time!
