Not you
I wasn't pointing the finger towards you for the subject veering - my understanding is that a user is not able to post a new heading (please correct me if I am wrong), and I was pleading to the moderator to switch topic.

Yummy Oasis Shrimp tacos nearer to 5th
While we were in Playa 2 weeks ago, our friends Ellen and Soraya from the Tequila Barrel told us about a new Oasis restaurant that had opened on 12th just west of 5th. We didn't want to walk all the way past the highway to get to the places mentioned in these posts, but we had a powerful hankering for shrimp tacos. They were great! Just as previously described, and only 10 pesos. We would have eaten there every day if my boyfriend had his way (like that will ever happen). Anyone know if this place is owned by the same people as the other Oasis?

My usual waiter at El Oasis on Highway-307 brought it to my attention that they had just opened the new restaurant on Calle12 back in February. We appreciated the outstanding service at the original location so much, that we never bothered eating at the new place. Besides, I like the spaciousness of the big palapa and it's a nice diversion from the tourist zone. For those of you who enjoy a brisk walk, just take Calle12 all the way to the highway and then go to your left for a block. You'll then be standing in front of the Superior Beer facility directly across the highway from El Oasis. Too bad Calle10 didn't go straight through!

El Oasis
Just returned yesterday. We ate at the "new" Oasis on 12th, it was around the corner from our hotel (La Tortuga).
We met Jamie and he was so flattered that his tacos had made James and Anna's website. I thought he was going to cry! He was a delight to talk to, as were the rest of his staff. They patiently let us practice our spanish and were so cheery and bright. Even with the new prime location, we were the only tourists in the joint on most occasions. They make their own habenero sauce fresh every morning. I hate spicy food but I LOVE Jamie's sauce! I put 2-4 drops per taco and make sure I have a cold drink handy. If anyone ever listens to anything I say on this board, please head to Jamie's joint. I tried to bring Jamie home with me but he said Oregon was too cold. I miss his tacos already.... --Kim |

El Oasis[/siz] [color] Kim, baby, I listened to ya. Those shrimp tacos were WONDERFUL! I had to try the marlin tacos, too. WOW, Jaime does it right. Kim, his sause wasn't that hot, but it was juuuust riiight. Funny thing was, when I would go in and order shrimp and marlin tacos "to go", they would always say, "You know these are appetizers?" I would say, "Your appetizers... my dinner!" Jamie and his staff are great. Just gotta get him on the Playa Deal Card. I tried. Also, I went to Taco Arabe and had the best marinated beef tacos with cooked onions and yes, cheese. Took them down the street, ate, had to come back and get 2 more...for me and 2 more for my wife. |

If you are in Akumal and want some excellent shrimp tacos try a little place called Lucy's. It's just a little north of the main street in the main shopping area. The sign says they are only open for lunch from 11 to 3. The tacos have deep fried shrimp and some salsa mix type stuff on it. The shrimp were piping hot. The gal there told us when we were there the first week of March that they just started offering them a couple weeks earlier. The cost was 15 pesos each. They also had crispy fish tacos and a pasta of the day, but we didn't try those. They also have very good ice cream and we did have some of the mango ice cream in a waffle cone, which was more of a bowl.

Any one know of a place that does a good job with both the Tacos Pastor and shrimp tacos?
Not to sound clueless, but I thought I had read that some of these things are served only at breakfast time in a food report earlier. Please tell me that they are available all day long!!! I need to escape the AI food and experience the real deal! |

The ones that are only available in the mornings are Tacos de Cochinita Pibil, a Yucatecan delicacy. They are located by the bus station on Juarez and 5th Ave. Arrive early (before 10:00 a.m.).
Tacos al pastor, as Bumper wrote, are available mostly in the aftenoon-evening. Several locations, try Tacos Israel (do a search using the handy tool located in the upper bar thingie), El Sarape, El fogon, and many more. |
