IU flag

Hey, I love that place and have managed even to sing a few John Prine songs there with Grady. I too would leave the IU flag, since my wife is a professor at IU and we live in Bloomington! I'd even put up with a Purdue flag, since my brother is an alum and a good guy. Having said that, if it were up to me (which it obviously isn't) I'd give the IU flag up if they agreed to take the Confederate flag down, something I've heard from several people over the past few years. When we were there over Christmas with our kids (young adults) I had to gangster them to go there by threatening to make them pay for their own beers because they saw the flag and said, "I don't think this is a place I want to hang out with all the other cool places we can go." Fortunately, they capitulated. Must have been the beer issue, I think

Personally, I could give a rip less about hanging a piece of cloth. Itīīs the music, itīīs the place, itīīs where Iīīd like to be.

Remember that the bar owner is not only English, he's Keith. He probably doesn't even realize the horrid significance you're attaching to the Confederate flag.

the bar...

Yes, I know. I've met Keith and I like him and you're probably right. Of course, meaning is always attributed to any symbol since there is no "meaning" inherent in any symbol. That's why it's a symbol. To think otherwise, is to make something a relic or an idol. When we present any symbol to others, whether it's an IU flag, a cross, a star of David, or a Cubs hat, the person "presenting" usually does it for a reason, although they might not know any better, kind of like young teens who wear a swastika and never heard of the Second World War. The implicit response by those who view or interact with that symbol might be: (a) Duh. What's that mean? (b) We have something in common and I share at least one of your values, passions, etc. or (c) That's repulsive because I don't share your values or a whole host of reactions that are variations on that theme. As someone who believes in free speech, I think people have a right to "present" whatever symbols they choose and others have a right to say, "I don't like that symbol." It's Keith's bar and he has every right to have up whatever symbols he wants and the rest of us have a right to not go there because he has a Confederate flag hanging up, to go there in spite of the confederate flag (what I do because I like Keith and his wife and the music, although that flag seems a throwback to a darker period in American history to me)_, or to go there, at least in part, BECAUSE there is a Confederate flag. That's all I'm saying.

Get it and got it. I just wanted to point out that Keith just hangs up flags people give him. I'm sure he might be a bit put off himself if he knew what that flag has come to mean in the US.

I was born in Dennis, Mississippi (yep, Tishamingo county, between Tishamingo and Belmont), and I know what discrimination and biggotry look like (sorry if any of you feel unintentionally criticized). You wonīt find any of that around Daveīs. I think a flag has to be openly supported, or should I say, openly defended, in order for there to be a significance. Listen to the music. You wonīt be offended.

It is not possible that you two have not met. I know for a fact that you have been at the bar at the same time. I will be more diligent next time with introductions.
