US Air cancelled my flight
Our flight was scheduled to return home to Boston leaving Cancun at 5:30 pm on April 29 06. I received a letter from my travel agent yesterday that I will be departing at 2:30 instead. I don't fly often so is this unusual? This is the same flight 650 we took back to Boston last year.

Well, blondy...they didn't cancel your flight. They just rearranged it. I wouldn't think it's that unusual this far out. Your subject line is much worse than reality.

If an airline has more than one flight going and can't fill both, they will often cancel one and fill the other.
They may also open another flight at a later date if there is enough demand. Simple economics. I hope it works out for you! |

As one of the other posters noted, it's a supply & demand, if there continues to be an erroneous perception that Cancun & PDC are a mangled wasteland, then vacationers will opt for other destinations, so flight schedules get thrown out the window until they can fill the bus up again. In speaking with AA, they may add the nonstops back into the schedules but until they get the load #'s up, all nonstops have been dropped, (Cancun to Boston). If you booked through a TA, for ex. "Shammy" they get notifications of these schedule changes and will notify their clients but if you book online as we did it's up you to frequently check your flights and if for example they add the nonstop back in, YOU have to request itinerary changes - the airlines wont email/call or send you a letter, you're just sol if you don't track your reservations. No matter, if we have to wrap ourselves up in Fedex boxes and ship our asses to PDC we're going to Peepfest '06 in Mar. |

I agree
It's mostly about all the hotels in Cancun not back together yet. Even when we flew to Hilton Head on Labor Day wk. end we had flts from Delta combined with Continental & U.S. Air. Same flt. all with different flt. numbers. Confusing, but they gotta fill the plane!

We did get a letter from our TA in the mail from the tour company. Maybe we'll get lucky and they'll change it back. It would of been nice to have laid on the beach "prime hours" a little before heading to the airport, well ,maybe it can still be done.

Flight Cancellations
I arrived at the Cancun airport Wednesday afternoon, Nov. 23, to find that my direct Mexicana flight back to Los Angeles had been cancelled. I wasn't notified by phone (I have a Mexican number as well as a US one) nor via the Internet (which was how I booked the flight). When I reached the counter, I was told that all Mexicana's direct flights from CUN to LAX were cancelled until further notice. (My friend flew from CUN to LAX on Mexicana Saturday, and had let me know that her flight was less than half full, so I suspect there just aren't enough people flying from LA to Cancun right now to make direct flights worthwhile, whereas connecting flights can deliver passengers coming in from a lot of different airports.)
So ... I was informed that I could fly to Guadalajara, spend the night there, and fly to LA in the morning, or fly to LA via Mexico City at any one of three times during the following day. Because I didn't relish the idea of spending my Thanksgiving on airplanes, I decided to instead return on Friday via Mexico City. (And enjoyed a magnificent T-Day feast at Zocalo with the usual suspects.) When I showed up for my 10:55 am flight on Friday, I was asked if I wouldn't prefer to wait until 4:50 pm and fly home on my original direct flight! At that point, I decided to stick with the arrangements I'd made on Wednesday, because the 10:55 am flight was definitely taking off, and I knew there would be lots of options for getting to LA once I made it to Mexico City. In retrospect, I suppose I could have asked Friday morning whether the direct flight had been reinstated, but it only occurred to me to check on the flight I'd rescheduled. If I'd known, I could have had a few more of those prime beach hours and a last lunch of shrimp tacos at Jaime's Oasis. But that's hindsight. Based on personal experience, I think trying to predict when any flight to or from Cancun will actually take off -- even as far away as April -- may be futile. However, in your particular case, it sounds as though the airline may simply be changing its flight schedule to a time that's more convenient for it and less so for you. That happens more often than I'd like, but I just take a few deep breaths and do my best to go with the flow. |
