Just back from 4 nights at the Riu Palace...

This was our 3rd trip to the PDC area and first time at the Palace. I also went on my very first dive trip with an outfit named "Dive Mike". If any of you have any questions about the area just let me know. We went into town 3 seperate times while we were there. A small group of us gathered one night at the Tequila Barrel to watch the SEC Championship game between UGA and LSU, great times!!!

One thing to note, the new pool area at the Riu Yucatan is REALLY nice. Also, we walked through the Playa Maya and I was very impressed. I will stay there at some point in the future.

I am curious about the condition of the beacg from the Riu Playacar to the Riu Yucatan.

When we were there in March, there was quite a drop (maybe 2 feet) from the grassy area to the "beach" and in places there wasn't much of a stretch of sand from the grassy property area to the water line.
Has any of this inproved post Wilma?? I know that it does flucuate some but was curious

I had a good visit with UGAPlaya there. He seemed to be hanging a long time at the beach bar.
Joana, I only got about 2 minutes of time with the person who I thought would have the answers so didn't have the opportunity to ask about Thomas.

Dos Cervaza Por Favor..... That phrase seems to be repeating in my head over and over. Great to meet you too Bob. I tried to introduce you to my wife but we could never seem to catch up with you. Great weather for our short stay, it was very very hard to leave.

The beaches along that stretch are in amazing shape. I know what you mean about the drop off last year as I saw it too. Not any more. The beach in front of the Palace and the Playacar is really nice.

Jobob- thanks for trying.
Funnily enough I recieved a mail from Thomas yesterday!!
I had changed my mailaddy and sent out a group mail- and "poof": after two years of silence there he is......telling me what a surprise it is to hear from me....
Well- I replied and I hope he will reply and not go into hybernation again.
In fact I told him I already had scouts out to look for him!

margaritamamma: Have a few pics of the beach and also the absolutely destroyed part of the Royal Hideaway. Also they're doing major beach renos in front of the R.H. so that it's flat now instead of the big ledge. Several Cats moving dirt. When I get them posted to a site I'll do a link.

I'm going to secrets excellence in July for 4 nights for my brothers wedding then I will be going to the Royal Hideaway because I heard the beach is/was better there with no sea grass. I've seen some horrible pictures of RH from about a month ago. Do I have anything to worry about waiting until July to go there, besides the weather??? Thanks in advance to whoever answers this!

Not too bad except that half of one building fell into the ocean and the beach is under massive repair. I wouldn't expect it to open until late Winter at the earliest. Before the storm it was really a pretty resort and I expect it to come back in all its glory.

If you are worried about the Royal Hideaway, you can't go wrong by staying at Secrets Excellence. We stayed there last April and LOVED it. Yes there is sea grass, but it didn't keep us from swimming in the water. Also, the rest of the resort is so amazing that it overshadows the sea grass.

I already have the reservations set for mid july though at the Royal Hideaway following a stay at Secrets Excellence. I'm thinking that the Royal Hideaway will be up and running and in somewhat good shape by then, but I may be wrong. I heard they were fixing the cliff on the beach as well so maybe the beach will be even better than before. I'm just hoping that the RH will be atleast 80 percent in mid July.

My guess is the RH won't open until at's at 100% and that's supposed to be either the end or begining of March.
