World Cup 2006 Draw
The USA gets Italy, Ghana and Czech Republic. Not too bad.
Mexico, who was handed the USA's number 1 seed, gets Iran, Angola and Portugal. A virtual walk in the park. Only 8 months until the best sporting event in the world. |

"Mexico, who was handed the USA's number 1 seed, " Do I detect some sour grapes from the qualifying round? Now the USA is quite a fantastic country BUT when it comes to football Mexico is world class. Neither country has much to worry about this time out though because this is England's year. (better check my meds) |

Portugal is not just ANY team... They're freaking awesome! Well... it could've gone a lot worse ![]() BTW do you already have SKY? Because I have to get it soon, otherwise my boyfriend WILL go insane if he can't watch every match... Those are gonna be long nights... Quote:
They have gotten really good and I think it's been a real pain in the butt for us. Every time there's a match with these two... sports shows start doing articles on how bad we've been doing lately with the americans. It's certainly become a challenge in the past few years. |

The US owns Mexico in the last 3 years. I think they have lost once out of 10 matches. The US won the qualifying group that Mexico was also in, and the US won the last major tournament where both teams were involved.
FIFA claims that their seeds were based on a formula which included performance over the last 3 World Cups, which still doesn't work, as the US was in the quarterfinals of the last two. It is politics. No one wants to admit that the US has a world class team, but in the latest world rankings, they are number 6, ahead of such teams as France, Spain, Portugal, and Mexico. Sonia, Portugal is not as good as they used to be. Mexico should have no problems. I will cheer for them until the moment of truth comes. Then, I go back to red, white and blue. |

Sonia, I had a mexican colleague a few years ago and during one world cup we all went together to watch the game Mexico-Germany together in a pub. When Mexico made the first goal, my mexican colleague was dancing and celebrating and everbody was giving him strange looks and was quiet. Was funny. In the end Germany won though. It was fun (not because Germany won).

Darn- I missed the drawing.....who are the Germans playing? Poland is in there, right?
Oh- and beware of the obscure African teams......in the last few world cups they always ended up being better than one would think. Remember Kamerun??? Hamburg will host matches as well- and the American team is staying here! |

The Dutch will meet some toughies:
SERBIA & MONTENEGRO - they kicked Spain out of the final tournament! IVORY COAST - kicked Kamerun ass! ARGENTINA - no need to explain why they're toughies. Interesting detail: our crown prince Willem-Alexander is married to the Argentinian Maxima. I wonder whether their marriage will hold... |

OTOH: if the Dutch are really as good as people say they are, they might as well get rid of these opponents early in in the tournament. Problem is, though, that the Dutch usually are slow starters, which they can't afford now in this group. |
