Playa in Sundays Chicago Tribune Travel

Playa del Carmen "One of Mexico's premeir restaurant towns" in the story called Cancun's comeback in the sand. picture of backhoe movinf sand on the beach between 8th and 10th ( this happen while I was stayinf at the Playa Maya 2 weeks ago). Also quoted a timeshare saleman (Daniel Rodriguez) as saying "Wilma's the best thing that ever happened to Playa" because Cancun people are booking in Playa.

i like the small quaintness of the sleepy fishing town........with fame comes big business. it is hard for small shop owners to compete with big companies.
also makes it harder for us regulars to find a place. prices increase and commercialize. and then you have another cancun.

Yuk Bigdave, let's not even think that Cancun has/had its purpose...but Playa is....well...Playa. Hope it can stay that way

Mr. Rodriguez is voicing an opinion held by many.

It was inevitable that Playa and the RM would become more popular, but Wilma pushed up the timetable, a bit. We are already starting to see quiet a few ex-Cancunenses enroll for courses.

yeah but these Cancun comparisons are really uninformed, IMHO. The dynamics are way different. The locals are way different. The layout is way different. The building restrictions are .... the list goes on.

If they move 5th Avenue into the ejido, deport the Italians and make all us locals move away from the beach, then we can start comparing ourselves to Cancun.

I am waiting for Jimmy Buffet to open a Margaritaville in Colosio. That will be my cue to exit.

sounds unlikely but then who knows. I remember 15 years ago, I said the day I see a McDonalds, is the day I dont come back. Well what are we, 4 McDonalds later and we are still here.

Oh man that is too funny. I literally laughed out loud at that one. Then I thought stranger things could happen. Its not like Playa is slowing down in growth.
