Ok so Juan Diego (the indian who saw the virgin) was walking around, minding his own business when BUM! There's the Virgen, right in front of him!
So she tells him in his own language, nahuatl, that she wants a temple, built right there, and asks him to go to the bishop to get it done. The bishop (of course) didn't believe a word and asked him for proof. A few days after the Virgen asked Juan Diego to pick up some flowers before he went to see the bishop again. He found some beautiful roses never before seen in that area, he took them to the bishop, holding them in his clothes, and when he showed him the roses, he saw this: ![]() I think he's a saint now, or is in the process of becoming one. |

Dallas's big cathedral was renamed in her honor and there is a huge tapestry of her hanging over the main altar. Visions Blessed Mother has been known to show up all over the world, the most famous being Lourdes, Fatima, and Medjugorde to name a few.

Sonia, I like your version of the story. Actually, what many people believe is that Juan Diego had gone to el Tepeyac, a hillside, to pray for his uncle who was very ill. The Virgin appeared before him to make a deal. If a chapel was built at that site, she would grant him the miracle of healing JD's uncle. Pope Paul made him a saint in 2003 (I think). Some people think that the Spaniards invented this appearance in order to convince the indigenous peoples to convert to catholicism. |

Nice to hear the stories; we'd never quite gotten the "jist" of the holiday, but every time we've been in Mexico this time of year, which has been quite a few times, we always see pilgrims running down the highway with torches, processions with floats depicting the Virgin appearing to Juan Diego, pilgrims on their hands and knees making their way to the cathedral (Puerto Vallarta), etc., etc. in the days proceeding the holiday.
Not sure if the actual day is December 10th, 11th or 12th but it is definitely one of those days. On Sunday just after dusk, returning from Yal-ku/Akumal there was one little procession just to the south of Playa heading into town consisting of a police car with lights flashing and siren howling, a truck just ahead with torch runner out in front, with fireworks shooting off the top of the truck. I guess there was a big parade in town a while later but we missed it. |
