A drawback of paradise...
(Besides hurricanes.)
I just dropped SarahB a note, wishing her a good holiday up north, but a speedy return as well, and realized that I would really miss her if, for whatever reason, she didn't return. I seem to be going through a phase of "losing" those I'm closest to down here recently. My first friend here where I live, the only other full-time single woman, moved back to FL about a month ago. Another friend is considering private school in the US for their child and would move back in that case. Other friends just put a for-sale sign on their palapa this week. My very good Mexican friend interviewed for a job in Mexico City last week and will probably get it and move there since it pays way more than her current profession here. So, yeah, now I can visit FL and Seattle and the southwest and DF more easily, but I don't wanna! I'd rather just have my friends still here!So... I guess this is one of the lessons of living here - people don't root themselves here permanently like they usually do in the Midwest. I suppose I will just have to get used to it. |

Being from the midwest, I know what you are saying....when we moved to our little paradise here, we found we made many of our friends right here in the business and in the hospitality business we found the very same problem...we make good friends and then they leave for some reason or another....this is perhaps compounded by the fact that our community is full of senior retirees who are even older than we are
All in all, we have fewer friends, but the ones we have that are really good we NEVER really lose...as you say, just more reasons to travel I guess...

That's sad Suzy but it seems now that Playa is on the map (so to speak) that some of the Peeps here have announced they are moving down there and others are planning on at least part time residence and with all the Peep Meets and Peep Fests how can you be alone?
It seems the problem may be in keeping up with all the social gatherings going on down there. Also with the forum here you will always have lots of friends to talk to and I'm sure alot of them would come down and help you if you ever needed it. Count your blessings girly. You are not alone!

I agree with you on the friends thing. Having/keeping/making friends is harder when people come and go so often. No one grew up here and most people haven't been in the area for all that long, so it's hard to have deep friendships with very many people. Last edited by SarahB; 12-14-2005 at 08:17 AM. |

Awww, Susie.... I'm basically numb right now from working all day, shopping, and then wrapping many gifts (and fighting off the cats while doing so), and thus I'm way too pooped to come up with any words of wisdom to maybe make you feel better......
but please feel a great big (((HUG))) coming to you from me!! I guess everything in life is "temporary" in its own way, so we need to appreciate and enjoy what we love when we have it. I don't have many what I would call "close" friends, but I do cherish those I do have. Are there any organizations (be it hobby or charity-related or whatever) in your immediate area that you'd be interested in where you could make some new chums?? Something you go to once or twice a week? |

"In the tropics, people come and they go." -- Jimmy Buffet
There are days that going back to the States doesn´t seem that bad of an idea. But there are people here who we can lean on, who will listen to us whine, buy us a drink and actually make us feel like we belong here. That was unexpected. People like James and Anna, Sarah, Suzie, and others we are getting to know. So, Suzie, not all your friends are leaving. We are still here. Thank you, thank you, thank you for your generous PM and offer to help. We think we actually have it under control. (But we´ve been wrong before.) At least today, anyway. Sarah B, if you don´t come "home," we will track you down and bring you back here. We miss your smiling face (not to mention the cookies, but that´s secondary, seriously!) and we´ll have brownies waiting for you when you come back. Without getting too maudlin, we´re beginning to feel like you guys might be...family. Not the scream at each other over Thanksgiving dinner kind of family. The other kind. The ones you actually like to be with. |
