I was away for a week, and am now making a concerted effort to spend less time in front of the computer now that I'm home.

Did anyone miss me?
Yes, very serious. My Dad has been quite ill. It was very touch and go for a few weeks. He finally came home from the hospital on Saturday... Happy Birthday Mom (saturday was her birthday). The latest prognosis is for a full recovery... though it will be a long one. He needs to go to the hospital daily for treatment and check ups for at least 6 weeks still. Getting older really sucks.

I missed you when you were gone... even if it was only a week. So how was the family vacation to FL?

I sincerely hope Dad's problems aren't related to the mold you kicked up during the cleaning ... that would be too much guilt to bear. I am hoping last summer was the nadir for me, with my Dad in the hospital with heart surgery, and us having to place my mom in a nursing home temporarily. Good thoughts down to NC and over to Sherman!

The vacation was very nice, even the driving wasn't bad. We didn't stop in Rocky Hill, after all, we were feeling cocky and made it all the way to Columbia, SC, before quitting for the night. We stayed in a neat part of FL -- Englewood, which is south of Sarasota, and just south of Venice. It is remaining happily undiscovered, with just enough development going on to show that maybe the powers-that-be there have learned from other areas' bad example. I've always liked the Gulf Coast of FL, and we seem to be zeroing in on an area we might want to retire to.
The only sort of sad thing was that the girls both made a point of saying how RELAXING this vacation was, that they could just jump from beach to pool to beach to pool, and isn't it nice Mommy's not dragging us on buses all over the place?
Sigh. AT least the Publix had Pacifico reasonably priced, and the beachcombing was neat -- this area has a lot of fossilized shark's teeth in addition to shells, so that was a new experience.
It's not Playa, but Highly recommended!
Guess I'll be saving up to do some "Mom goes wild" jaunts down to Playa, or maybe Greg and myself when the girls are both doing sleepaway camp a few summers from now.

I am not psychic...but I knew you were busy and had a lot on your mind.

Glad to hear your Dad is recovering.

And Ditto what Rita said.

No, no... not related to the black mold. They got that all taken care of before the end of the year thankfully. Necrotic bacterial pneumonia. Think it might have been caused by aspirating a peanut. When Dad was taken into the hospital, he was in septic shock. He was lucky my mother put her foot down and made him go to the hospital when she did, because if they waited until the morning, it's likely he would not still be with us. One of the scans that was taken when he was first admitted to the hospital showed a mass that they thought might be cancerous. Fluid built up in his pleural cavity and became infected so they had to insert a drain tube. The pleural fluid then became viscous and septic so surgery was required to remove it. Originally, the doctors thought they would have to remove up to 1/3 of Daad's right lung. Thankfully, they did not have to do so. While in surgery, they also did a biopsy of the mass in the lung and determined it was benign. So Dad came out very lucky... all things considered.

I just spoke to both my parents a little earlier, Dad is sounding stronger every day, however, he still has a long way to go. He tires very easily. Just going from the bedroom to the kitchen wears him out. And he can only talk for short periods of time before he loses his breathe and gets very weak. He's lost a ton of weight too... he's 6'2" and currently weighs only 150 lbs... before he went into the hospital he had already dropped down to 170 lbs which was way below his normal weight.

Wow... you made it a decent distance before stopping for the night. Both my grandparents used to live in the Port Charlotte area (just north of Punta Gorda not too far from Ft Myers). So I've spent a lot of time on the Gulf side of FL. It's gotten so built up compared to when my grandparents first moved there in the mid-60s... there's was almost nothing there. Not that way anymore.

One of my favorite things to do when I was a kid was to search for sharks teeth. We used to be able to find ones in the lot right next to my grandparents house. I still have a jar full of them. Only we were only allowed outside at certain times... when the gator that lived nearby was not lurking around. Whenever he was out sunning near the house, we weren't allowed outside.

Sounds like the girls had a great vacation. And sounds like you and Greg made the best of it. Glad you enjoyed yourselves.

Maybe not psychic... but you've been a terrific help to me and I really appreciate it. Have finally started getting some action on my resume. Phone has been ringing a lot this past week... which is encouraging and good for the self-esteem if nothing else. I'm confident that the right opportunity will present itself eventually.

No... however, I've received a couple thank you/no thank you's from two Austin ad agencies. Still waiting to hear back on from about 6 others in Austin. Plus I've been in touch with a former boss of mine who moved to Austin a couple years ago and opened up a sales training/recruitment business. Texas, specifically the Austin and San Antonio, area is one of the locales that we've pinpointed in our search. Then we'd have no excuse for not attending the toobin regattas.

Yeah, I've had that happen too during the last few months and I don't think anyone ever noticed, not that I'm as frequent a poster as many around here. Good luck with your parents. It does suck having to deal with them getting older, getting sick (and sometimes losing them) that's for sure.
I for one miss the likes of DonGregorio, flugie, my fruitfly (busy at the orchard though), and Mave (hope she is doing well, haven't heard for awhile). It's been nice to see shiantry back lately (gne gne)...

Sorry to hear that about your father, but glad to hear he is getting better...I was down to Florida to see my mother last weekend..she's back in the hospital after 2nd hip break, then ankle break, and now severe staff infection from the ankle surgery....its been very tough on her!

We did miss you and so nice to see you posting regularly again!

Well Denisea, count me in as one of those who has missed you. You were one of the first gals that I really took a liking to back in my lurker phase. I had no idea about your Dad, however, I had a hunch that there was something going on that kept you away from the forum. I will keep him in my thoughts. I can relate to what you are going through. It's difficult to watch our parents suffer.

I also miss Kinzie and Mave.
