Favourite Non-Traditional Holiday Songs?

Mine would have to be 'Fairytale of New York' by the Irish band The Pogues and Kirsty MacColl. Great song.

Quote:
-----POGUES-----

It was Christmas Eve babe in the drunk tank
An old man said to me, won't see another one
And then he sang a song, The Rare Old Mountain Dew
And I turned my face away and dreamed about you

Got on a lucky one, came in eighteen to one
I've got a feeling this year's for me and you
So happy Christmas, I love you baby
I can see a better time when all our dreams come true

------KIRSTY------

They've got cars big as bars, they've got rivers of gold
But the wind goes right through you It's no place for the old
When you first took my hand on a cold Christmas Eve
You promised me Broadway was waiting for me

You were handsome,

-----POGUES-------

You were pretty, Queen of New York City

-------BOTH-------

When the band finished playing they howled out for more
Sinatra was swinging, all the drunks they were singing
We kissed on the corner then danced through the night

The boys of the NYPD choir were singing 'Galway Bay'
And the bells were ringing out for Christmas day

-----KIRSTY----

You're a bum, You're a punk,

------POGUES------

You're an old slut on junk
Lying there almost dead on a drip in that bed

---------KIRSTY--------

You scum bag, You maggot, You cheap lousy faggot
Happy Christmas your a**e, I pray God It's our last

-----BOTH------

The boys of the NYPD choir were singing 'Galway Bay'
And the bells were ringing out for Christmas day

----POGUES-----

I could have been someone,

-----KIRSTY------

well so could anyone
You took my dreams from me when I first found you

-------POGUES-------

I kept them with me babe, I put them with my own
Can't make it all alone I've built my dreams around you

-----BOTH------

The boys of the NYPD choir were singing 'Galway Bay'
And the bells were ringing out for Christmas day

The lyrics aren't exactly sweet or romantic, but what a great tune.

I also love Bob and Doug MacKenzie's '12 Days of Christmas' and Ukrainian comic Metro's version too...it goes like this:

Quote:
quote:

On eleven days from Christmas mine missus give for me

11 orange babushkas

10 two and a half bull year olds

9 months pregnant

8 all my supper

7 4X2 slabs- for to build it chicken coop, keep da ducks in

6 overalls

FIVE GOLDEN RINGS(of kielbasa)

4 holupchi

3 rubber boot

2 pitahey

and a bowl of sour cream for me

I guess that is only really funny if you know a lot of Ukrainians though, like I do.

"Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer". And please don't play that Dominic
the Donkey thing when I'm around. I'd rather listen to the dogs barking "Jingle Bells". I heard a great one the other day though. Porky Pig doing "Blue christmas"

I guess it's a good thing this is about HOLIDAY songs (have we beaten this dead horse enough yet? ) because I like Adam Sandler's Hanukkah Song. And I like that song from the "new" Grinch, "Where Are You, Christmas?" And I like that Porky Pig Blue Christmas too. That inspired us a couple of years ago for our answering machine message... which I think we're recycling this year:

Tune of Blue Christmas
(son playing piano, husband playing guitar in background, me singing):
"We'll have a blue Christmas without your message,
We'll have a blue Christmas without your message,
You know we're not at home,
So leave a message after the tone
Please dooooo, so we won't have a Blue blue blue Christmas...."

(This year son is going to attempt to sing the harmony... AND we have to sing it in less than 20 seconds... are we total GEEKS or WHAT???? )

"All I want for Christmas is a real good Tan" Kenny Chesney. When that came out last year it kind of became my dream for the future. In my current job that will never happen because it's the busiest time of year for me but I can dream.

I like that to..

One of my favorites is Sanctus by Angels of Venice, Christmas music that has a instrumental/new age sort of feel to it.

That Pogues song is one of my faves. I saw them do it live, although Shane McGowan, as usual, was too drunk to remember the words.

I also like "They don't Make Jews like Jesus, Anymore", by Kinky Friedman. Not exactly a Christmas song, but close.

"Driving Home For Christmas" by Chris Rea is one of my favourite.
Just the song to listen to when you are on your way home from work on the last day before the christmas holidays.

Christmas in the Northwest! A beautiful song that was written for a benefit cd. Soon to be a classic.
