Purple

What a beautiful color. Especially, when it is worn on the fingertip.

Doesn't that happen when one is fingerprinted by the proper authorities?

Oh yes, except when your flesh has been eaten away by white posphorous and you've got fingerprints no more.

I suppose you are right. The alternative (entire villages gassed off the face of the earth, 98% of the votes going to the incumbent, invasions of neighboring states, corruption of high ranking UN officials, mass graves, jailed dissidents, etc.) was better.

Come on guys.....I think we can all agree that it is a wonderful thing Saddam is gone...is anyone disputing that? It is also a wonderful thing that the folks are voting in Iraq! That IS progress....it is also important to note that apparently many folks feel like the most important effect of their vote is to finally get the U.S. out of their country.

Ironic, isn't it?

Everyone in the world should be able to vote freely, but it just doesn't feel entirely right when that happens as a by-product of much darker designs.

Having said that, I do wish them all the best, even should they choose a religious government against the express wishes of their liberators.

Wishing all a peaceful Holiday season and hoping that peace and harmony begins on this forum and spreads from each of us here and continues across the world.

I hope democracy works out for them. I hope it lasts. I hope it ushers in a new era of freedom and prosperity for the Iraqi people and that it spreads througout the Middle East.

(but do I really think it will? no)

I think they are trying to scramble and 'make the best of a bad situation', which is a good thing- but we also shouldn't forget the inital entry into Iraq was under false pretenses, and illegal, and that the whole thing has been a big expensive mess.

Hubris. You can lead a people to democracy but you can't force them to drink it up.

I am sure we can. Every civilized person in the world wants what is best for his fellow human. Problem is, differing opinions on what exactly that means.

Oh, I don't know- you get people from all over the world in one room and ask them what 'basic human rights' are, and what they want in life, and I bet you get mostly the same answers- no matter what culture, race, or religion, we are all 'kin under the skin'.

I think there is a difference between recognizing that, and recognizing that history has shown that achieving them for all is not that simple...and it is certainly not a matter of forcing change on a group of people; often they have to realize it for themselves and make the necessary changes themselves, not have it done for them.

And also whether the end justifies the means.
