What is with these crappy search results?

Why all of a sudden, when you do a search on a legitimate topic on Yahoo or Google, are these totally random and unrelated results popping up that are basically just BS? They are usually topped with the categories, "ads by google," and, "advertise on this site." They make it impossible to find whatever "real" results may be strewn in amongst them and they're pissing me off! Any suggestions for wading through them?

Don't know about you but I'm not aware of too many Not For Profit search engines. It takes a significant amount of money to keep these large search engines running. Advertising dollars are what brings in revenue. A little bit like commercial television.

Annoying, yes, but sometimes you get what you pay for.

Darn, I thought we were gonna have a little disagreement, posturing, preaching, and stuff to start off a Sunday morning. Nope, we're in agreement here.

Susie, I see that problem at Yahoo and MSN search where they have ads at the side and as the top results; but Google always puts the ads at the side, which is one of the reasons it remains my preferred search tool. If you getting different results, PM me an example of what to search for on Google and I'll see if I have an suggestions... part of my job is to help our staff figure out how to better search for the solutions they need to find while the customers are on the phone... and Google is what we use at work too.

As for why you might have noticed a change... yes it's the all mighty dollar... but I'm wondering if you search also at MSN. That's where you would have noticed the biggest change... I recently earned Christmas cash doing overtime at work approving ads for MSN as they tested their new system.

Ya beat me to it.
I use Google too. I like the Google scholar (for scientific peer review journal/article searches) and the Google image options a lot...
Another two I sometimes use are dogpile.com-- composed of many different search engines, and Webcrawler.com
