Overkill?
Working at a corporation we often get gifts from other companies that we do business with. We now have received our 4th food basket and some chocolate covered popcorn that is to die for. One of our 'gifts' was for a donation to the Red Cross in the name of 'Friends of such and such Company'. Which I think is great. The point being we have more food than we can eat in a lifetime and I am sure we haven't seen the last of it. Do any of you get gifts like this at your company and what are your thoughts on it?

When I used to work as a doctors assistant we always got swamped with food- cookies, chocolate etc. We also got money from many patients we treated, as they knew that doctors assistants here don't earn THAT much (around 1200$ post tax).
Whenever cookies etc. got too much we put them on plates in the waiting room, if there were some really beautifully packed ones we'd sometimes take them home and give them away as gifts to neighbours etc. But a lot of the food definately went onto our hips........................... I've always liked it- probably also because it had a very personal touch due to the connection we had with the patients. |

Mike gets stuff that goed to the whole department and they share, but occassionally he gets something sent to him and he brings it home. He brought home a huge tin of various types of brownies the other day. I ate some and put most of them in the freezer to (sneak and eat whenever the urge strikes) fill out the cookie plates I'll set out over the holidays. My favorite was the one agency who used to give him fruit. He'd get 12 of the biggest sweetest grapefruit, or giant oranges or whatever. Wonderful stuff--and no guilt in the eating!!!

Sometimes I get very thoughtful gifts from my students. Chopsticks, mixing spoons, violets, pictures and plants.
The last gift I received was a stuffed Shigella toy. Everytime I look at it I laugh. It is hanging on the handle of my file cabinet. A perfect fomite location. I want to start a collection of them

We get a lot of that at our office to - we give alot of the stuff away as a door prize at our company Christmas party. The stuff that comes in after the fact, just gets set out in the break room (the cleaning crew ends up taking alot of it home) !!!

Those are really gross! I'm sure we have enough of the real thing hanging around our cafeteria here. But back to the original topic, I think I have gained 10 lbs today alone. Baklava, cookies and some sort of carrot cake roll so far. Can't wait to see what the rest of the week brings. |

We get one of those baskets at a rate of about one per day....in an office of 50 men, engineers, purchasers, and tech writers- they don't last long.
They are hard to resist and yes- it is overkill. Why not a fruit basket instead of junk food once in a while?

For Shigella, see 'Health' and then 'stomache'. As for back on topic... When I worked in an office and received gifts from clients, we donated the edibles to shelters, and the flowers to hospital patients. |
