Hireing a guide sounds very good if it's not too expencive. We thought about taking a local bus, but hireing a guide with a car would be greate because of the flexibility.
We are not staying at the Luz en Yucatan hotel, but at the Hotel Hacienda Merida. It looks great and have a good score at Trip Advisor, so we wanted to try it out. It just a block away from Luz.

I would contact your hotel. They probably have tours and guides that they use regularly. My friend and I booked a tour to Uxmal through our hotel, Hotel Julamis. There were a total of 7 people on our tour (they picked up from Luz and a few of the other smaller hotels) and it was really fun and the guide was very knowledgeable.
Wear a hat and strong sunscreen, and you may want bug spray. One man on our tour did not wear sunscreen and became ill on the way back.
