I haven't read the graphic novels that the series is based upon, but that character, Michonne, who appears at the end of season two, should be a great addition. I've read that the two zombies chained to here were her boyfriend and his best friend. She hacked off their arms and jaws and uses them to ward off other walkers. Her character profile from the comics:
