Car Rental Options?

Hi,

Four of us are thinking of renting a car to do a little sightseeing. In particular maybe driving to Tulum for a day at the beach, or that lagoon whose name escapes me for snorkeling, etc.

Any comments or suggestion re: the best rental agencies, safety, or cost?

Thank you Tony! I'm still new here and learning the search options. Your post should provide me plenty of info.

No problem. It took me a little while to figure it out, too.
I always use the Advanced Search option. On most occasions I've found that to be the most accurate. I usually select "Search entire posts" underneath the "Key Words", and I usually select "Show Results as Posts" at the bottom.

Let me make one suggestion to you if this planned day pans out. There is a place (somehow restaurant doesn't quite cover it) called Oscar & Lalo's on Soliman Bay between Playa and Tulum. Don't allow yourself to miss at least stopping in there for a drink. One of the board luminaries (SCTX) has much more experience there than I do, and he raves about the place and has apparently been going there for years. We just made our first trip there a few weeks ago on our last trip.

When we were there, the line from the baseball movie (with Kevin Costner, the name of the flick is escaping my dwindling grey matter at the moment) "This must be heaven" was how we felt about the place. It is absolutely idyllic. There isn't any other development on the bay, and the tables are literally just a couple of feet from the water.

The Laguna is called Yal - Ku and is at North Akumal . The snorkling is also very good in Akumal bay with a large reef that you can swim to from the beach.

Thanks, we'll make a point of it. It's exactly this kind of hidden treasures that we're looking for.

Synestere, thanks also for the Laguna info. I can't wait!

I'd recommend Hertz, you can get insurance with 100% coverage and $0 deductible. Cost us $75 USD for 1 day rental of a Nissan Tsuru (Sentra), but it had A/C, and I had no fear of Visa charges at a later date.
