My advice would be: Put it in your carry on in an easy to reach pocket.
After you land in Cancun and before you go through customs. Take it out of your carry on and put it in your pocket. I've never seen anyone personally searched in customs, although I suppose it could happen. Once through customs, put it wherever you feel it will be the safest. Good Luck! (not on the getting the ring there. That's easy. Hope she says Yes!)
