The bypass is good however it's very rough, so expect to go very slow. Also seems like all semi-trailers use this bypass, which probably explains the bad condition of the road. The bypass should take you 30-45 minutes to get through.
Then you hit the wandering mountain roads which are also full of big potholes.
I found the road segment between Tampico & Veracruz is the one I had to be the most alert in regards to road hazards.
