If you 100% need shade, I would maybe stay elsewhere. Our group stayed here about a year ago. We also needed shade. We had a hard time finding shade, even with going out to the pool at 7am! A lot of our folks were miserable. The resort does not have umbrellas at all by the pool and those chairs that Shammy is talking about are worthless to protect you from sun. The palm trees (maybe 1-2) didn't give off any shade unless you were standing directly under it. We loved the resort -- but shade was a huge issue for us.
We stayed at the Valentin the prior year and had plenty of shade and the pools were way better. Excellence Playa Mujeres is another resort with lots of little huts and shade.
Hope this helps!
