I have FM2 (inmigrante) status, travel frequently in the spring and fall for work, and have been refining this process for a while...

The short line is labeled "Mexicanos" (not residents) and like snappysammy said, if the visitors line is short, I just go there. I have been sent back once for crashing the Mexicano line - he was having a bad day, so was I, kinda grumpy all around. What I do now, if the visitors line is long, is ask a lineup herder, very nicely, in Spanish, if they will allow me in the Mexicano line, and they have always ushered me in. If I arrive at the front and someone doesn't like it, I can say "he said I could". As I'm not yet a Mexican national (and there's a future decision to be made), I do technically belong in the visitor line.
And when I go to Canada, I'm in the visitor line there too....
