Best AI for mom and 18 yr old daughter

I want to take my daughter to Playa to celebrate her 18th birthday next fall. Does anyone have a recommendation for a fabulous, unforgettable place?

My husband and I have been to the Royal Hideaway and loved it. We took the kids to the Occidental Flamenco Grand Xcaret and were less impressed.

Must have outstanding service, very good to excellent food and a great beach. I also don't like "HUGE" resorts, but this would be last on my list.

We loved Riu Palace (There is a new one now as well, this was the original Riu Palace)....Riu Tequila has a disco across the street for late night partying and Playa is a very short cab ride or 25 minute walk away. We enjoyed the beautiful facilities, great food, simple elegance, nice beach, weight room and walking through Playacar for morning exercise. The lobby bar is a great hang out spot before dinner. You can visit all 3 (or 4) of the other Riu's that are close by if you like.

I hear it is not as nice as the Royal Hideaway, but a gentle step down in amenities for the price difference.

Shammy is really the expert on these things.....

Iberostar Quetzal/Tucan. Great beach, good food, $5 taxi ride to Playa (or 30-minute walk).

You might also check out maya or linda but they are much bigger.

Riu Palace if you want a small, upscale resort with good food and service and a nice beach (although it won't be a secluded beach as other resorts share the same stretch). Might be a bit over the top for an 18 year old though - depends on the kid!

Riu Yucatan if you want a more happenin place for an 18 year old. Still small, not as lavish, more kids and families, same beach situation.

Tucan/Quetzal for an all around good, family friendly resort. Small again, same beach, decent food, pretty lively.

The new Barcelo Maya Tropical/Colonial for a more upscale version of a great family friendly resort. Awesome beach and pools, good food, decent entertainment - but bigger property than the ones above and about 20 minutes south of town.

Royal Porto Real if you want to be really close to town for some nightlife, have an ocean view jr. suite with a nice jacuzzi tubby in the room, good beach and food.

One I wouldn't suggest is the El Dorado Seaside Suites. It's adults only, so you won't find many other 18 year olds there, and will find many couples and honeymooners and a general adult population. Beach is "OK", not the best but not terrible. Just don't think it's what you're looking for this time around.

The other Iberostar resorts north of Playa are good too, the Lindo and Maya being the two most upscale of the four. But this is a sprawling complex, so if you're not into big, then maybe not.

With an 18 year old I would say the closer to town the better. Royal Porta Real or the Reef Club Coco Beach would be my picks.
