High definition movies...here we come!

The Consumer Electronics Show is going on in Vegas right now; both Sony and Toshiba have announced the arrival of their HD-DVD players to the US market sometime this spring. Unfortunatley for the consumer, they are two separate non-compatible formats, both making claims they are the best.

Sony Pictures and Twentieth Century Fox are going to announce some Blue-ray titles in the next week or so. I haven't heard of any studios releasing titles for HD-DVD, yet, but both Microsoft and H-P have said they are backing that format.

In any case, for those that are interested in this kind of thing, we should have lots of good HD titles with relatively inexpensive players by next year. Now THAT will make our HD displays shine!

JamesA,
I know you have the top top top of the line but I can't see myself getting rid of my Onkyo.

That's no slouch! If I had the dough, I would have looked at it, too. I settled for this:

Btw, Mac, do you think there are peeps reading this thread and rolling their eyes?

I think the Sony PlayStation 3 will play Blue Ray. That may be a start for me.

Do you have a high-def display to go along with the PS3? It does have an HDMI out, if I am not mistaken.

You'll get your hands on a Blue-ray disc before I get my hands on a HD player. I'd love to hear your impressions...or anyone elses.

HP is also on the Blu-Ray board of directors, and will be supporting both formats, I have read.
