Tinman, I would do a rental car. If you can book one in advance, you should be able to rent it for no more than $70 or $80 USD. The taxi alone would cost you this. I usual rent at Europcar which is below the Sahara - however, I did have a bit of a bad experience just this last week when I was there when I returned the vehicle.

It is only about a mile to walk to the 'entrance of akumal,' but depending on where you want to go from there, you could be walking for another 2-3 miles. Yal-Ku is all the way to the north end of town, 'La Buena Vida' is about 1 - 1.5 miles miles from the entrance.
However, you can also go snorkeling and diving at the beach that is directly in front of the entrance (it's only about 50 meters to the beach from the entrance). I have never paid anyone to swim in this area, however, I had a friend that I told to go there and he said that he had to pay $50 NM to snorkel in this area. I wouldn't even know who or where you would have to pay to walk to the beach. I also don't know how easy it would be to retrieve a taxi to return to Playa. This would be a bigger concern for me. Akumal
I have a condo in Akumal - you don't pay anyone to snorkel anywhere. The beaches are public. You can enter Half Moon Bay through several empty lots - this is generally the best snorkeling. The best entrance into the water is in front of La Buena Vida - it's a great place to buy a drink or lunch and you can use their facilities.
Akumal Bay has an open and accessible beach. It also has great snorkeling - go in the afternoon for the best chance of seeing a turtle. (You might also try the Lagoon but go early before the tour buses.) Taxis run regularly up and down the streets since Yal Ku Lagoon is at the end. It takes us about 15 minutes to walk from La Buena Vida to town. Then I would guess another 15 out to the highway. |
