Even though I fake bake before I go too I always start with SPF 30 the 1st couple days until I see my burning potential. I work my way down from there rarely going below a 15. Mainly because I tend to burn when snorkeling because I forget the time. Don't forget to apply to your ears, backs of hands and tops of your feet. A friend of mine did and we had to take him to a doc the burn was so bad. You'll have a great time.

Welcome fellow central minnesotan! I'm still amazed by how many folks from Minnesota are on this forum! Is this your first trip to Playa? You will LOVE it. We are in the process of planning our second trip. Anyway, in regards to sunscreen, you are going to get different advice. I always go with no less than spf 15 on my body and at least spf 30 on my face. However, I am your typical fair-skinned minnesotan, and I'd fry if I wore anything less. So it depends on your skin type. If it helps, that is also what I wear up here in the summer. Personally, I wouldn't go with anything less than spf 15- the rays are more direct down there, and nothing ruins your vaca quicker than a nasty sunburn! Another key is reapplying often- like every two hours. No matter what the bottle says, no sunscreen lasts all day, especially if you're in and out of the water. Have fun!

I just had to reply because I am another Central Minnesotan, Big Lake actually. I would have to agree not to forget the suncreen on the ears and tops of your feet, I did that once, ouch!! Also, if you get braids wear a hat because the top of your head will burn.

Perhaps we should just continue the MN thing going here! Started the fake bake on Thursday, 5 minutes to start, going for 8 tomorrow
. I'm not your typical fair skinned MN (I tan easy and get dark), but I'd concur with what the rest have said. Start high and work your way down...7 days is a long time, assuming you'll be there for a week, sure don't want to spend it red as a lobster and probably sicker than a dog.BTW - I'm hoping you've all "planted your butt" for MN on this thread Click Here to Plant . Gotta keep us on top! Have fun in Playa! |

My husband was one of those macho guys who thought sunscreen was for sissies. The first time in Mexico, he actually blistered up and spent 3 days in the room....WOOHOO!
Meanwhile, I was out enjoying the sun and fun!!! USE SUNSCREEN!!! |

I have found that if you get get too much sun, any where on your body, can make you physically sick. My husband burnt the tops of his feet, in Mexico our first year there,5 years ago, he was sick as a dog. Use sunscreen, otherwise you will lose valuable time to lose on your vacation. Cover your body again, and again and again.

Try to bring enough sunscreen with you because the price for sunscreen in Playa is expensive, even at Wal-Mart and Chedraui. You should be able to find it cheaper in the states than anywhere that I have found in Playa.
