Lobster/Captain Hook

My wife has been doing some tour research and has found two ship tours ... Lobster (aprox 6 hours long) and Captain Hook (3.5 hours). Which is better to take the family on? Daughter is 15 and son is 12.

Never heard of either one of them? From where, on what, to where, with what company? Perhaps somebody would recognize them under another name with something to go on.

i did the captain hook tour once. it leaves out of cancun. basically, you have two ships that leave out at the same time. they give you bandannas and will mark temp tatoos or scars on you. you sail out....some performances are done, the ship's staff fight one another, you eat either a lobster tail or steak dinner...then they crank up the music and everyone dances. all of this while booze is being served.

My wife found them under the our resort website Viva Wyndham Maya.

The lobster cruise states "Columbus, a wooden galleon and set sail into the tranquil Nichupte lagoon. Enjoy the succulent lobster or steak feast under the stars with the city lights of Cancun in the distance"

Captain Hook states "Come aboard an authentic 18th century replica of a Spanish Galleon and step back in time to the pirate era! As you cruise through the beautiful waters of the Nichupte lagoon"

Okey-dokey, ABF, your added info and A'ndrea's note sheds a bit more light. It would appear that these trips are base out of Cancun then. As we've travelled about the Caribbean, we've seen many of these pirate galleon/replica ship type excursions. We haven't taken any of them, as they don't appeal to us, but we've seen many in operation as they stopped at beaches where we were located. From the several we've seen, it would appear the majority of them feature a whole lot of booze, some very loud music, rope swinging, and along those lines. Real "Party boats" that tend to cater a pretty youthful crowd. Not that there's anything wrong with that - each to their own - but perhaps not completely appropriate for a family outing. Now, these may be completely different, and perhaps there's someone out there who has had some first hand knowledge to offer, but it rather sounds like that's the demographic they may well be targeting. For something that might be more suitable for your party, you might consider a trip on the Fat Cat. They don't offer a full meal service type excursion, but we've certainly enjoyed our experience with them in the past and have already booked another cruise during our next visit to Playa. There's information available on this site about what the Cat offers. Good luck, and enjoy your stay.

I did Capitan Hook and Columbus. You really can't compare the two. They are completely different.

If you are in the partying mood for a lot of drinking, watching the crew put on a show, crowd participation, playing games then Capitan Hook is for you. The crew is constantly refilling your beer cup as it gets a little low. They also make you do a lot of those head-shaking tequila shots. They have a meal break where they served you grilled lobster or steak. Food was good. It was fun and worth doing once. At the end the two ships confront each other and a fight breaks out between the crews. All theatrics.

Columbus was a lot more subdued. They seat everybody pretty tight. So when they claim it's romantic, I didn't agree. The ship sails out into the lagoon, hangs out there a bit and then comes back. They keep the lights dimmed. Anyway there is a host on a microphone who entertains everybody with some humor, mostly making fun of where all the tourists are from. He introduces a horn player who plays slow, romantic type tunes. We were served surf & turf with an open bar. The food was just ok. We were there in April and it got cold out there. They did provide blankets for warmth.

Personally, I had a good time on both. Not sure I'd do either one again. But was good to experience both once.

we went on the Captain Hook cruise 3 years ago. It was actually a lot of fun. The show they put on was much more entertaining than I expected. Food was good and all the beer and rum and coke you could drink. My kids were not along but other parents had theirs with and they seemed to be having a lot of fun. Huge hangover the next day, but it was worth it.

I did Captain Hook with my husband three years ago. We had a fabulous time. We didn't have our kids with us but I think the kids would really enjoy it. Especially when the ships meet in the bay & the "pirates" fight each other. Very cool.

Depends on you. The crew makes sure you are part of it. If you are going by yourself and outgoing .. you will have fun. If a bit shy and reserve ... no you will not have fun.

We did this one last year! we had a great time! in fact we are going to do it again this year we never stopped laughing at the stuff the crew were doing we were on the 'green' ship which won the fight! yay!..having said that during the trip one of the crew got ME up on a seat and did the 'Titanic' thing with arms outstretched and all that!! how embarrassing was that! for a start I am the wrong side of sixty five!! but after all the rum and cokes I didn't care! soo funny....even if you are on your own you soon make friends everybody we met were great! the crew bless 'em they worked really hard to make your trip special.. I can recommend this trip for your teenagers.. I am not so sure about very young children though...because of all the alcohol etc......but it's worth a go!!
