The Don Juan books, Tales of power etc. written by Carlos Castenada, who I believe was an Anthropology undergrad, were more about religion/belief systems than drugs. The drugs were used to open the doors of perception and allow him to think outside the box as they say today. I used all of these drugs recreationally in the late 60's early 70's, sometimes in combinations. I think that they did more good than harm but would never admit it to my daughters. Driving down the road when that windowpane kicked in is still a memorable experience.

Well, when rye bread goes moldy it can create ergot - or homemade LSD. Back then rye bread is what people made/ate. So all these people are eating ergot, then as their doing the dishes and gazing out the window they see their neighbour flying through the trees on a broomstick... Next thing you know, they're burning the neighbour at the stake.

Boy, talk about coming late to the party.....
My first experience with pot was with the older brother of my girlfriend who had just come home from the Marine Corps. I liked it. I am sure part of that was the kick of hanging out with a pretty cool older guy with a lot of very adventurous stories. But I liked it. I had to wonder if I had heard all these heinous things about pot, and it was OK, then all that other stuff was probably worth a look as well. This was in 1965, and there was a lot going on in those days. I spent about a decade tasting the fruits before I realized that I was in a place that wasn't where I wanted to be. I 86'd all the other stuff. I can't say that I really regret the path I took. I suspect I would be materially better off had I gone another way, but (and I may be flattering myself here) I do think that I did experience a pretty good amount of spiritual growth through the ups and downs of "better living through chemistry". Tripping while riding in a gunship watching a firefight was pretty memorable. Glad I didn't have the stick. I view cannabis as a harmless product. I don't keep any around the house any more, but given a social situation where it would present itself, I wouldn't think twice about getting high. I think we all have to make our own choices. |
