Costa Maya, Belize Info?

Hi all, my husband wanted to do a cruise this time around with the kids**, and we finally decided on the destinations. Our cruise goes to Belize, Costa Maya, Cozumel and Grand Cayman. I am really excited cuz we are in Cozumel for 12 hours and I plan to spend the whole day in PDC!

Never been to Belize or Costa Maya and was wondering if anyone had any great recommendations for beaches, sites, etc...

We are bringing my 16 year old niece as the "nanny" to watch my 2 and 5 year old boys and I am psyched. I booked 2 rooms...an obnoxiously large suite with a wet bar, whirlpool and balcony and a room across the hall for the kids. Yay!

Cruise is May 7th

**by the way, our solo, adults only trip to Old San Juan in December (just Miles and I) was absolutely perfect. I highly recommend the area. It was fantastic. I really need to do a trip report.

thanks for any Belize, Costa Maya (and for that matter Grand Cayman!) info you might have.

I may be stupid or having an Alzheimers moment, but doesn't Costa Maya = Riviera Maya = Playa del Carmen?

As for Belize, as much as it pains me to say this, you're probably better off taking one of the ship's tours to the ruins. I've done that twice and saw two different ruins, neither of which I can remember the names of right now. Beyond that, I don't believe you'll have a lot of options if you dock in Belize City, as we did.

I will have to look up Majahual

I was trying to map Costa Maya but didn't have a detailed enough map. The cruise "specialist" (lol) said Costa Maya was closer to PDC than Cozumel was. Yeah, right. I didn't believe it, but not too worried about the details. Whether I get to PDC via Costa Maya or Cozumel doesn't matter to me, as long as I get there for a mini-day fix!

Thanks for the Belize info Susie. I am not a big fan of shore excursions through the cruiselines as I always feel "trapped" into an itinerary - usually longer than I like. We typically like to do our own thing, and with 2 young children, it's kind of a necessity. If they have a "bus to the beach" deal, we might look into that.

I highly recommend going swimming with the stingrays when at Grand Cayman. Take the earliest trip offered, as it will get a lil crowded the later into the day you go. Definately buy one of those throwaway underwater camera's. If you are into high-end shopping,ie;Rolex,Gucci, etc....then this is the place to get a deal. Was way outta my pricerange, so i left the crowded streets of Georgetown poste-haste. There were 14 cruiseships in the harbor the day we went, and lines everywhere.Long lines!

Our family loves Belize, but not Belize City. Depending on how much time you have you can take a boat (Cheap) or puddlejumper to Ambergris (expensive). It is a whole different Belize there, laid back, beautiful, no cars (except a 5 block stretch in town). (Note:For those who have been to Ambergris, Piasano passed away last week)
