Foreigner being married in Mexico

Does anyone know how a foreigner would go about making arrangements to be married in Mexico? My brother lives in Trinidad but he'd like to be married in Cuernavaca this summer. However, I have no idea how to begin this process. What would he need from home, and who does he need to contact in Mexico to find out the requirements etc?

Yeah, I know he should try Playa but since he's in the Caribbean the last thing he wants to see is another beach. The mountains and spring-like temperatures are more appealing right now.

Has he got a bride yet? I'm sure Mexico would get him one for the right price (maybe even at Wal-Mart!) but it helps with the paperwork if he has that one sorted out...

I thought you would be against the selling of human beings?

I think this has been answered with informative links already on another thread. Did you try searching?

Just checked and saw the following. He's better off marrying in Trinidad and meeting us in Cuernavaca for a holiday.

Below is Mexico wedding document requirements that you may find useful.

Civil Weddings:

Marriage license is issued within jurisdiction where wedding will take place, following the ceremony. Cost is approximately $500 USD. Fee is paid directly to the Justice of the Peace (JP) at the JP's office when applying for marriage license. Bride and groom and 4 witnesses must go to JP's office to sign marriage license application at least 4 business days before ceremony. To apply for marriage license, bride and groom and 4 witnesses must provide the documents outlined below.

Bride & Groom Requirements:
General Requirements:
Must be 18 years of age or older. Persons under 18 years of age can't get married without consent of a parent or guardian. With parental consent, males must be at least 16 years of age and women 14 years of age.
Must arrive at least 4 working days before wedding ceremony to submit all documents. Ceremony cannot proceed unless all documents are in order.
Documentation Requirements:
Home address and occupations.
Valid passports (passports are not required for US citizens to enter Mexico, however, they are mandatory for weddings).
Tourist ID (visa) provided by customs upon arrival at Cancun International Airport.
Europeans must have a visa.
If either bride or groom are Mexican, additional documents are required as follows:
Original and copy of Mexican's birth certificate.
Original and copy of official photo ID of Mexican person.
Copy and original of Immigration permit to marry a Mexican.
If foreigner is living in México, their FM2, FM3 or FMT must be presented.
If applicable:
Original or certified copy of former spouse’s death translated and certified with Apostille seal by the Office of External Affairs at the Mexican Consulate in your Country.
Original divorce decree translated and certified with Apostille seal by the Office of External Affairs at the Mexican Consulate in your Country.
Legal documentation of adoption or name change translated and certified with Apostille seal by the Office of External Affairs at the Mexican Consulate in your Country.
Medical Requirements:
Blood test (to determine blood type, RH factor, HIV, VD) must be submitted with all documents in Spanish. Laboratory report must be very detailed (including date of birth) and results clearly legible. Tests must be done within 2 weeks prior to wedding date. Tests must be taken in Mexico. Test can be done at any local clinic and results are typically ready in 24 hours. Cost is approximately $40 per person.
Doctor's certification of blood test. Must have certificate from local doctor that certifies lab results. Cost is approximately $60 USD per certificate.
Witnesses Requirements:
4 witnesses are required for wedding ceremony.
Must arrive 4 business days prior to ceremony if traveling from abroad.
Name, age, nationality, home address, and occupation.
Tourist ID (visa) provided by customs upon arrival at Cancun International Airport.

If I had had to pay $500 US to the JP in order to get married, we would have just stuck with the church wedding. Seems a little steep to me. $50 US is a little more likely.

I find that amount VERY high. Got it from one of the threads that I searched for and am still wondering if that money is to be paid in Mexico...that's a lot of pesos!

That fee is accurate, or at least closely within the range of being accurate, according to printed information we have received from city hall. It is fits with my own experience of being a foreigner and getting married (legally) in Mexico.

Nope. Church marriages are not legal in Mexico, just as legal (civil) marriages are not sanctioned by any church here. You can do one, the other, or both.

Faced with the costs (as well as logistics difficulties), we often advise people to consider a quick, legal ceremony in their home country before or after their trip here, and to have just a ceremonial event here. However people often feel the ceremony has to be binding, you know. But that would be my advice on how to do it, for what my advice on anything related to marriage may be worth!

Anyway you want to tell us about your experience, since there is a good chance I could be in the same position in a few years?

Steve, I think what you said about just having a ceremony in Mexico makes a lot of sense. My brother is in total agreement. So you see, your advice was worth something after all
