Monarch Butterflies in Mexico/Morelia

Hi all, my sister in law, a teacher, is visiting Mexico on a partially subsidized trip with her hubby (my brother), to the reserves near Morelia, to observe the Monarch buttterfly colonies. They have done quite a bit of reasearch, and of course know all about the butterflies, but not much about the area, other than the altitude issue. Anyone have any experience there, tips, suggestions etc that I could pass on? Have done a bit of googling and looks like quite an impressive sight, given that there are millions of butterflies. Also here that Morelia is a beautiful city, any thoughts. Thanks.

Very rural area, connected by second class bus system.
How long are they staying in the area? Do they have lodging arranged already? Not many nice hotels in the area. Food is good, but not cathered towards "gringos" tastes.

Morelia is a very nice, colonial stye city, not very big and a lot of foreigners find is beautiful and quiet. I never been there, but the guys that have visited have been pleased with their stay.

The reserve's weather can be rainny eventhough the surrounding area is dry and sunny. Altitude issue???? Is not too high, at least not as high as Mexico city (1,000 feet lower).

Thanks for the info. They are part of an arranged tour including teachers from US and five people from here in Canada. They have done quite a bit of research already, and yes the altitude is a factor, they are both in pretty good shape so should be ok. They are really looking forward to the trip and have heard nice things about Morelia. They will only be in Mexico just over a week.
