JUst went down myself upon hearing about this. It looks pretty bad. I don't feel right about posting photos, although I did take some. To their credit, the beach chairs and cushions are out in front of the most northern part of the structure. However there's no more palapa anywhere, and many of the supporting beams are charred and fallen. Yellow "do no cross" type of tape is strung all around in front of the Pirata, as well, reaching to the northern part of the Colibri (or maybe even a bit farther).
Most interesting thing is that a guest of ours, the daughter in a family who have been here with us about 10 nights now, said that she was at the Pirata and that the gas explosiion part came later, the fire having started when a fireball got away from one of the fire dancers and landed on the palapa roof. Another guest there at the time said he grabbed his things as quickly as he could and came out and, confirming our guest's story, saw the entire palapa structure blazing before any explosion had been heard. He said the street outside was like a bumper car situation, with people trying to leave. Steve |

Whew, thanks, James. That lets me off the hook on the photo bit, and by a long shot! We must have just missed each other there...

Happy to hear that apparently noone got hurt!!
And "happy" to hear that apparently the whole thing didn't start with the gastank but "just" fire on one of the roofs- so people had time to flee. Imagine a gastank going in the crowded ******! ![]() |
